5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little camera 16 Oct 2009

Colour Name:Silver
I recently bought this to replace our existing and ancient one. I was looking for a decent camera that wasn't too bulky or fancy and didn't cost too much; this was just the ticket. It has the usual anti-red eye function with the added bonus of being able to take videos (still to be used), panoramic and face detection (ideal for making sure your photos are in focus!

It runs on AA batteries so it's worthwhile investing in some rechargeable ones as it can be quite draining, however I like that it's battery operated. Most digital cameras are re-charged through the USB port on your PC but what if you don't have a PC handy? This camera doesn't have that problem: just make sure you have some spare batteries and off you go! The pack even comes with 2 batteries to get you started.

I used the camera for the first time at some friends' wedding and I was very pleased with the resulting photos: clear, no blurring and good quality. The camera itself was lightweight and easy to use, from taking the photos to deleting them. While the accompanying software and transferring the photos from camera to PC were a breeze. I particularly liked the fact that after uploading the photos to the PC they weren't wiped from the camera's memory card, which is what our old one did!

It would have been nice if it came with a protective case but all-in-all an excellent purchase that is good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great camera for the price 5 Jan 2010
Colour Name:Silver|Verified Purchase
I bought the camera as a Christmas present for my wife. She wanted one which was simple to use with as few buttons as possible. So far she has just set it to automatic and is very pleased with the point and shoot results. It is small enough to slip in a pocket but has the advantage of using AA batteries, so with a spare set of rechargeables, there is no worry about being powerless when out and about. For the price I paid we think it is a great little camera although you do need to buy an SD memory card as it doesn't come with one.

I was so impressed by the one I bought for my wife I bought a second one for my daughter. As a camera for people who just want to get good pictures with a minimum of fuss - point and click - it can't be beaten.

I don't write reviews for every product I buy, usually only doing so when something has either greatly impressed me or greatly shocked me. This little camera is a conundrum, somehow managing to fit between the two but only because of price.

For a sub 50 camera, this is a pretty good investment, especially if you register with Fuji and pay just a little more for an extended guarantee which is far, far cheaper than that offered by the retailers. Picture quality varies from average to nice but never exceptional. Shots aren't always in focus and colours can be a little odd, however for the price of the camera, they're acceptable. Nowhere near as good as my bigger Fuji but then that cost several times more and I wasn't expecting it to match that anyway. However, the display is quite poor with shots looking much darker on the LCD screen than they actually will be once you upload to your computer. You have to learn to ignore what you see on the screen and hope for the best - hardly the best thing!

So up to now, barring a couple of niggles, it's simple to use, light to carry and runs on AA batteries which means you can carry spares and not have to rely on a built in battery exhausting itself when you're away from home.

Unfortunately, that's also where the A170 really falls over. This camera absolutely eats battery power and I'm surprised Fuji have released such an energy inefficient product in this age of environmentalism and power preservation. Even with a new pair of high capacity alkaline batteries, I'd estimate you're still not looking at much more than sixty or so pictures. An even odder quirk is that even with a brand new pair of quality alkalines, the battery meter will drop from full to two thirds almost immediately after insertion and switching on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy to use and good quality 31 Jan 2010

I was looking for a 70th bithday gift for my mother. She wanted a decent digital camera but I didn't want to be at the end of a phone trying to explain how to get operate a camera on a regular basis. This has saved those frustrating phone calls. A very intuitive easy to use camera, perfect point and shoot for people who want decent quality pictures but don't want to spend time trying to work out how to use it. That said, if you are a more ambitious photographer, there are plenty of additional manual settings available if you don't want to leave the camera set on auto. A nice compact size, ideal for someone who wants a good camera to take on holiday etc..

Bought this as a Christmas present for an aunt and she loves it. It was easy to explain the features to her, and she's now snapping away. Quality of images looks good, compared to other compact cameras. Definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fujifilm FinePix A170 14 Dec 2009
Colour Name:Silver
This is a very good camera for this price range. Resonable build, easy to use and good quality pictures.Works with batteries only, which is fine for what I need it for. Only qibble is that the sliding battery cover is a bit flimsy.Does not come with a Memory card or a case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 31 Aug 2010
Colour Name:Blue
This is my first 'proper' digital camera, and I'm not disappointed. My first choice after reading a review in a computer magazine, I spent days trawling the internet looking at digital cameras, reading as many reviews as possible, Which? reports etc, but still came back to the Fuji A170. Superb build quality, nicely weighted in a metal case (no cheap plastic here). The lens is stunning for the price, software download easy peasy, printed images faultless. I chose the blue version, most attractive it is too. The only niggle is the full user guide is only contained on the enclosed cd and runs to 102 pages, you only get very basic instructions on printed matter. All in all a remarkably good buy, especially at Amazon's price.
