Designed especially for the X-Pro1 and X-E1, the FUJINON XF Lens series promises enhanced resolution and light volume in image edge areas as well as reduced chromatic aberration for exceptional image quality. Featuring an all-glass aspherical lens and other elements, the lens is polished to perfection and treated with a Super EBC coating. Holding the high-quality metal barrel and operating the precision-machined 1/3-step aperture ring is a sensation that fires the desire to capture every scene. For photographers who seek the peak of photographic excellence, FUJIFILM raises the curtain on a new era of interchangeable lenses and unveils a premium lineup of 3 single-focal length lenses.

High standards

With a fast F1.4 aperture, the 35mm XF lens (135 equivalent: 53mm) is perfect for low light shots. Featuring an all-glass aspherical lens and other elements, the lens is polished to perfection and treated with Super EBC coating while the high-quality metal barrel and precision-machined 1/3-step aperture ring gives versatile control. Excellent out-of-focus bokeh are achieved thanks to the design of the moulded aperture diaphragm blades. The blades are curved to create a circular image at all aperture settings, while the very edges of each blade are meticulously rounded off rather than simply cut off, which delivers a sharper image. Specifically designed to maximise the mirrorless design of the body the X Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm giving high resolution right across the image.

By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
+ Solid construction
+ Light weight at 187g.
+ 52mm thread (same as 18mm lens)
+ Lens hood included with rubber cap
+ Convenient external aperture ring
+ Manual focus ring well damp
+ Reasonably sharp wide open, sharper when stopped down
+ Stellar image quality, colours
+ Beautiful bokeh
+ No strong vignetting
+ Reasonable AF speed
- Lens cap difficult to pinch
- Rubber lens hood cap easy to drop off when knocked
- Slight chromatic aberration (purple fringing) at wide open
- Slight glow to edges at wide open. Visible at 100% only.
- Not internal zoom
- Noisy zooming mechanism, not good for video
- Minimum focus distance of 28cm
- Have to use EVF when shooting at minimum focus distance. OVF will not focus.
- OVF framelines covers less than 100%. Photos will be larger
- OVF parallax adjustment of close subjects is significant, but not as drastic as 60mm lens

I love the quality of this lens. It makes beautiful pictures with the X-Pro1. Colour and sharpness are close to perfection. The depth of field is also rendered beautifully.

The AF speed is reasonable. However, it's challenging to take photos of people at walking speed. Most negative points are not related to the optical quality of the lens.

5 stars for image quality, probably 4 stars for other issues.

COMPARED TO THE PANASONIC LEICA 25mm f/1.4 MICRO FOUR THIRDS LENS

Performance is very similar. The main difference is the sensor that the lens is used with. The X-Pro1 with its larger sensor has slightly shallower depth of field. I'm surprised and impressed that the depth of field difference isn't much more. Someone obviously picked the right sensor size for Micro Four Thirds.
