A high-performance lens covering a wide range of scene types. The lens has a fixed focal length of 27mm (41mm in 35mm format equivalent), offering a field of view similar to that of the human eye, capturing each scene as precisely and naturally as you see it. It includes a glass moulded aspheric element which reduces image distortion as much as possible.

Weighing 78g and measuring 23mm in length, this is one of the smallest and lightest single focal length lenses available for APS-sensor mirrorless cameras. Its thin form factor keeps the camera compact when mounted, encouraging you to take your camera wherever you go.

The advanced optical design is coupled with FUJINON's proprietory HT-EBC Coating that brings a large amount of light onto the camera sensor to draw the maximum performance out of the X-Trans sensor, thus achieving outstanding resolving power for sharp and clear images.

The lens incorporates an autofocus design that uses a high-torque coreless DC motor to shift all of the front lens elements (5 elements in 4 groups) to achieve a fast AF speed. The quick AF response is one of the fastest amongst single focal length lenses on APS-sensor mirrorless cameras.

  • Premium-quality focus ring
The high precision focus ring is made of metal, and requires delicate operation during manual focusing. The materials and the design ensure a comfortable feel and exactly the right amount of torque when rotating the ring.
  • Bokeh effect for isolating a subject
The use of a seven-blade round diaphragm means your subject is isolated with beautiful bokeh in portraiture with a shallow depth of field, or for close-up photography of stunning dishes or small accessories.
  • Available in two colours
The 27mm lens will be available two different colours - both silver and black - to allow users to accessorise their X series cameras to their own taste.

The FUJINON XF27mmF2.8 lens does not feature an aperture ring in order to keep it compact and lightweight. When using this lens, please update your X-Pro1 or X-E1 camera body's firmware to enable aperture adjustment via the camera's command dial.

I purchased this lens primarily due to it's size. It is a very compact and lightweight lens that changes the character of the XE-2 I have it fitted to, from a mini SLR feel, to the feel of a large compact camera. As the reason I switched to a mirror less format was to make my camera truly portable, I wanted as small a lens as possible to be able to fit the camera in a coat pocket and this lens is the smallest one out there. The 27mm focal length is a good compromise allowing for both portrait and landscape shots and f2.8 is just about fast enough.

I have managed to get some great photos with this lens and it is ideal for group shots. Focus speed is good and better than the 35mm or the 18-55 lens. It also means I have my camera with me more often and is usually the only lens I have on my camera.

The reason I have knocked off a star is that I think the price is a bit on the high side for what is a simple pancake lens with no aperture ring. As stated before it is also not that fast and has no image stabilisation. I was lucky enough to find this lens 2nd hand in my local camera shop in perfect condition so have not paid full price for it. I think the full price is a bit of a stretch, best to wait for the Fuji lens offers to come around again.

Another reviewer described this lens as resembling a micro four thirds offering, which is about right because it is small and 'pocketable'. However, don't let anyone convince you that it is in any way inferior to other Fuji X-Series primes, because it produces excellent results just like the rest of them. The space saving on the instrument has partly been achieved by the absence of an aperture ring, which simply means you make the necessary adjustments on your camera body. Slightly less retro and intuitive than usual for Fuji, but it doesn't matter a great deal, other than cosmetically.

The lens does not come shipped with a hood, presumably again to save space, but you can obtain third party varieties that screw into the filter thread if you are concerned by this. I bought such an item, but understand that the lens itself works well against bright light even without one.

The lens is not massively popular in Fuji circles not due to any deficiencies, but moreover because many of the first converts to the system obtained the earlier launched 35mm f1.4 model instead, either packaged with their X-Pro1 or X-E1 cameras, or alternatively as a standalone product. Optically this 27mm lens is obviously slower, but if anything provides even sharper results at all available apertures across the whole frame. It also focuses accurately far more reliably than it's more glamorous cousin. The focal length is not so different that you are likely to need both lenses, although I own the pair of them and enjoy the results both give to me.

Anyone lucky enough to get this lens as part of a Fuji promotion will be delighted by it. I agree that its original retail price was somewhat excessive, but very few people are disappointed by the results produced by the lens.

It is compact and light, razor sharp -especially at the centre- and practically transformed my X-E1 into a discreet walkabout camera. It is a totally enjoyable lens with an attractive angle of view for almost any type of photography. I would very highly recommend this lens to anyone owning X-mount larger cameras, such as the X-E1 or X-Pro1.

I am not a photography expert by any means, so I'll leave comments about technical performance to others, but this is a great lens when paired with the X-M1. You can fit it in a jacket pocket and people don't notice when you are using it on the street, and it's much less of an attention magnet indoors.

If you're like me and aren't ready to buy several lenses to cover the different focal lengths, this is a great companion for the M1's kit lens. I'll stick to the 16-50 when going out to take photographs, but this lens makes carrying the camera around (when going to work or heading to the pub) much less of a chore. As a casual photographer, spending the money on this lens has enabled me to use the camera more because I don't have to worry about stashing it safely.

The only thing that I would say about its performance is that the lens will hunt a lot when in auto-focus mode, focusing out and in again every time you take a picture (even if you haven't moved an inch). If I'm aiming at something still, I'll set the focus manually to avoid this.

For:
Superb optics producing sharp, detailed images with excellent contrast and colour.
Very small and light.

Against:
Focussing is ultimately accurate but very noisy and slow, and the image "jumps" as the lens hunts in and out. This is most definitely not a video or a "fast action" still lens for that matter.

Opinion:
I don't do video and while the noisy, slow focusing was initially a bit of a disappointment, the images more than make up for it - hence my 5* rating. Be aware though that not everyone will agree, and depending on the intended use the focusing may be a deal-breaker despite the excellent optical performance.
