Fujifilm's decision to include the award-winning Super CCD sensor in its latest A-Series cameras is a boon to photographers who want the best image quality without the complexity of a more elaborate digital camera. Seven years ago, Fujifilm set itself apart from other manufacturers by introducing its own image sensor, the Super CCD. Using the human eye as a model and mimicking the way it functions, Super CCD enhances vertical and horizontal resolution, improves color reproduction, widens dynamic range, and increases signal-to-noise ratios and light sensitivities. All of these factors play important roles in the production of higher-quality digital pictures.

The FinePix A500 is ideal for the first-time digital camera buyer or any photographer who craves simplicity without sacrificing image quality. In addition to the Super CCD sensor, the A500 offers the following desirable features:

5-megapixel Super CCD HR performancee. Users can enlarge pictures to an 8 x 10-inch print size without a problem and enjoy the zooming and cropping benefits that this new mid-range-resolution camera provides.

3x Fujinon zoom lens. Fujinon, a Fujifilm sister company, is a world leader in lens technology. Broadcasters, astronomers, scientists, and the military all use Fujinon optics. The A500 has a sharp 3x optical zoom lens manufactured by Fujinon.

Internal memory. This is a great safety net for FinePix A500 users. They can fill up their xD Picture card and have the security of knowing some extra space is tucked away for those unexpected picture moments.

LCD with anti-glare properties. Fujifilm is a world leader in anti-glare monitor coatings, and this technology can be found in millions of LCD, plasma, and other displays around the world. The coating reduces glare on the 1.8-inch LCD of the FinePix A500 for easier viewing in direct light.

Four scene modes: portrait, landscape, sport, and night. These scene modes are great aids in getting the best picture quality in challenging photo situations.

AA batteries. Two AA batteries power the FinePix A500. This is yet another convenience for the user since AA batteries are readily available.

I bought this to compliment my S9500, which I bought at the same time, so I would have a camera to fit in my pocket when carrying a DSLR sized camera around would be a pain. It is very important for me to have a camera with an optical viewfinder so that I can take pictures in bright outdoor light and see what I am doing. This was the key feature for me in choosing this camera from this price range. The LCDs on the backs of cameras are fine for previewing captured images, but not much else in my view. Plus points - it does what it says on the tin, including more than acceptable macro shots. Accurate focus, quite useful if fiddly optical zoom, and wonderful colour balance that is not oversaturated as is the case with many of the rival manufacturers' products (honourable exception, Olympus).
Minus points - xD card supplied is too small (appears to be the same with all Fujis). No case. But then look at the price. VFM is hard to beat.

I was looking for a simple point and shoot camera to supplement my SLR, and this fits the bill perfectly - so much so that I often use it instead of my other cameras. It has a nice robust feel to it. The images are cristal clear and sharp, with nice bright colours. The initial set-up is simple using the sensible menu options.
The zoom control is a little fiddly to use, but you get used to it quite quickly.
The internal memory is very small, so get an xd card of at least 256 mb which will hold about 100 shots on max resolution.
Battery life is good - I use 2300mA NiMh rechargables and a set lasts for a full day (at least 50 - 60 shots)

got this this morning and am chuffed with it! i've bought it mainly for pictures of the kids at school events because my old 2mp couldn't cope with low lighting. i've only played with this but it does everything you want for normal family snapshots. Very sharp picture, has a viewfinder which is helpful if the lcd gets broken or you can't see the lcd well. nice fit in the hand and nice controls. easy and straight forward to use but you can still do things like adjust the white balance and alter the exposure.
