You can even capture tiny videos on the Fuji FinePix A201, although the resolution renders the capability a bit of a gimmick. The digital zoom on the camera only works in the lower resolution modes and is fairly limited, 2.5x at maximum. The fixed-focus lens does a commendable job although it can distort a little at close range. For really close work there is a macro mode that's especially good. The built-in flash is good to about 10 feet.
Everything can be set to automatic, for simple point-and-shoot operation, which comes across as the design brief for the camera. For the more adventurous there are manual modes for white balance and exposure compensation. Altering these is a tad fiddly and you need to experiment a little. The LCD screen doesn't quite have the range of contrast needed for indoor shooting, it can be tricky to see what you're aiming at and the viewfinder isn't quite as accurate, so closer images are offset a little.
The two AA batteries (supplied) do their best, but battery consumption can be horrific. The batteries can be flat before you've half filled the memory card. This isn't helped by the fact that it is very tempting to view images on the LCD screen as soon as you've taken them. A charger and a few sets of rechargeable batteries are highly recommended.
The quality of the pictures is superb; colour accuracy and saturation are excellent. Indoor with a flash the pictures are slightly warm but this can be compensated for using the manual white balance modes. The A210 is easy to use and a quick read of the excellent manual is all you'll need. The results are good and the A201 makes an ideal no-fuss digital compact camera. --Miles Berkeley
The camera also boasts the ability to capture bursts of video action (without sound) and to be used as a webcam and comes supplied with a 16MB SmartMedia card.

The A201 is a joy to use, simply point and shoot and then review your shot on the LCD screen on the back. This camera is unbelievably small and light given that it takes pictures with a resolution of 2 million pixels if you compare it with similar spec cameras from a few years back. This model has an energy saving mode which really is needed – digital stills cameras used to be ridiculously power hungry but the A201 only takes 2 x AA cells. As long as you don’t use the colour LCD back constantly you can take plenty of photos without a battery change.
You can set the resolution and compression settings independently which I really like, although I mostly use it with the maximum resolution of 2 Megapixels (1600x1200) and with the compression set to Fine, or Normal depending on how many pics I need to fit on a smartmedia card. With these settings you can print up to about 10”x 8” quite comfortably. You can manually set exposure (a few stops up or down) and white balance and get some quite funky effects as well as the usual flash settings: red eye reduction, slow synchro, etc. although I just leave it on auto and get on with framing the shot. The Finepix software included is remarkably easy to use – just stick the USB lead into the camera and it launches the program and displays thumbnails of all your shots. One click and the photos are downloaded to your hard disk and you can erase the card and start again – no more buying film!
A really nice touch is the movie feature which allows you to take little (lo-res) .avi files up to 20 seconds. These are about 10 or so frames per second and have a really great super8 type quality – great for emailing to family and friends, although worth compressing to mpeg files first to reduce size.
On the downside, wait for it…. It doesn’t have an optical zoom (which doesn’t bother me as it would considerably increase the size and weight). It doesn’t come with a case – you NEED one, believe me, I got the nice Fujifilm pouch for about an extra tenner, well worth it. It absolutely devours batteries especially if you use the LCD a lot – if you are buying this camera get a battery charger and 4 x high power metal hydride (very important) batteries. I keep 2 in the camera and keep 2 on trickle charge at home – this way I can put freshly recharged cells in whenever I go out – simple! I would also recommend buying another smartmedia card probably a 32Mb or a 64Mb as it only comes with a 16Mb card. These are incredibly cheap at the moment, they used to be pretty pricey.
Overall I would thoroughly recommend this camera, in the six months I’ve had it I’ve taken over 1500 photos with it – imagine how much film that would have cost! It’s an absolute steal at this price.., so it gets the 5 star treatment. Go buy one!
