This is a very special book indeed. It is so complex. You really end up caring for the characters, John and Martin. However the magic about this tale is that nothing is straight-forward: the fact that the characters have names is a way of suggesting how meaningful people are to John.Martin is not one person, but the name of anyone who John feels an identity with. The structure of the novel parallels that of Pulp Fiction - no linear action, but broken recollections of life, with no apparent coherency. The language has a simplicity that makes the story even more moving, through understatement. The last chapter is so realistic that you feel angry at the book having to end at all.
