This disc was originally issued as a Fucik selection on Teldec in 1973. To that has been added the Dvorak Rhapsody, a staple diet for this Czech orchestra. The sound of the recording was always very good and still sounds well today.
The music on this disc goes with a real swing and is played with real gusto and enjoyment. This is very much the Czech orchestra under Vaclev Neumann letting their collective hair down and having something of a ball. All of this music is strongly tuneful and very well written. This is very much a Czech equivalent of Johann Strauss and is equally well written and memorable. It is played by people who very evidently have it in their blood.
The Entry of the Gladiators will be very familiar to anyone who has been to a circus as it was regularly used as a circus signature tune in an abbreviated form. The opening Florentine March is equally well known and the 'Der alte Brummbar' offers a delightful bassoon solo with orchestra.
This is very joyful disc and I would suggest that it will give considerable pleasure to anyone who enjoys the VPO New Year's Day concerts.
