5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely smashing read., 5 Oct 2000

Forget about being PC. These books are simply rip-roaring fun. Anyone who liked Sherlock Holmes or the Moonstone (Wilkie Collins) will love these tales. They full of cliff-hangers, beautiful oriental women, exotic locations, noble causes, deadly plans and yet gloriously innocent. Very few people actually die although we're told repeatedly that Dr Fu Manchu is diabolically evil. Although written in the 1930's they have a very Victorian feel to them. Highly recommended. Great for reading aloud when making food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply: Amazing., 17 April 2001
By A Customer
After a gap of 14 years, Sax Rohmer returned triumphantly to his evil creation; Dr. Fu Manchu. This omnibus contains the best tales by far. Great settings, colourful characters and a keen eye for detail on the author's part ensure that the stories are never dull. The first two novels; "Daughter Of Fu Manchu" and "The Mask Of Fu Manchu" have an Indiana Jones feel to them as the young narrator, an archaeologist named Shan Greville assists the older characters, Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie to put a halt to the evil machinations of the devil doctor. However it is the third story; "Fu Manchu's Bride" which is the real treat in this collection. After a rollercoaster of a plot, the sting in the tale can't fail to raise a smile. Even though you know it's coming, Sax Rohmer's execution of this "twist" is expertly handled. I would strongly recommend this collection for fans of great escapist fiction. Buy it and take it on holiday with you. Seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not on par with Rohmer's earlier efforts., 17 April 2001
By A Customer
After the brilliant trio contained in "Omnibus 2", the novels in this collection would inevitably pale in comparison. Having said that, "The Trail Of Fu Manchu" is the most atmospheric novel I have ever read. Fog envelopes London cloaking the city with a menacing air of mystery as the Chinese master criminal pursues his evil aims. The devil doctor's underground lair provides a great location for the struggle between his forces and those of Scotland Yard under the irrepressible Nayland Smith and Inspector Gallaho. The second novel, "President Fu Manchu" isn't as good although it contains elements of Rohmer's extraordinary genius. (The German memory expert who sculpts busts of his captor only to throw them off the skyscraper in frustration is one such example). At the end of this novel, Fu Manchu is swept over Niagara Falls. Being the eighth novel out of thirteen, obviously he survives. "Re-Enter Fu Manchu" was the penultimate Fu Manchu novel and is very sketchy. Rohmer's earlier skills as a writer of mystery and suspense seem to have desrted him by the time this one was written. Not a bad trio of novels, but you do wish that Allison & Busby had continued to publish the novels in the correct chronological order, as they did with the first two collections. The novels are still very good but they don't seem to flow as smoothly as the earlier Fu Manchu tales. After Rohmer abandoned the first person narrative, Fu Manchu did tend to lose a bit of his "menace". Recommended though.
