New album, new lineup. I guess it's the Rasputina way...

Melora Creager remains at the centre, however, and her stamp is all over this album. The historical flavouring may have changed slightly (we're back in the early 1900s, now), but there's no mistaking this album for anything else.

Musically, _Frustration Plantation_ is a natural extension of the sharper, heavier sound of _Cabin Fever_: lots of distortion on the cellos, stronger vocals, and an increasing debt of inspiration to rock n' roll (with a Rasputina twist, as on _The Lost and Found_'s covers). This is not to say that there aren't a few instrumental, undistorted cello-led passages, but anyone who still prefers Raspy's first album may find _Plantation_ not so much to their taste.

The musical blend is less successful than on the fabulous _Cabin Fever_, with fewer standout tracks and several that are just raucous and/or meandering. 'Doomsday Averted' is fractured and interesting, but probably not the best album-opener, and I found 'Oh Injury' deeply tedious. But 'The Mayor' is up there with the best of Raspy's material, talk-track 'My Captivity by Savages' is as silly as ever, and cover song 'If Your Kisses Can't Hold the Man You Love' is pure genius. Add in fun, fast-paced renditions of a couple of traditional songs ('Wicked Dickie' and 'When I was a Young Girl') and you have another eccentrically great Rasputina package.

weepin western cellos 12 May 2004

Well Rasputina seem stronger and more self-sure than ive ever seen or heard before and trust me i have admired their courage and originality from the very start. Frustration Plantation seems the correct terminology for this grande and somwhat ground breaking album, i feel what i noticed above all is that the album seems to have a lot more compositional values and seems alot more structured than previous though all rasps stuff has had originality and greatness, Frustration Plantation seems like a revelation for the band.
I feel a direction is clear i feel a new confidence and arrogance is prominent and i feel over all the art of the whole grande album the culture and the dareing nature to fall out of a comfort zone is there and it really shows and pays off.
Melora uses her vioce alot more as if she has really noticed what it is for lol though she didnt seem to use the vabrato effects within her voice as much as past songs yet the cellos really rock with catchy riffs especilly TRACK 7 and TRACK 10. The humour i love of rasputina is there and is somwhat more ironic and really really tounge in cheek, over all i like rasputinas foot in mouth suggestions im sure they would hate to be taken seriously after all they are thartre they are entertainment so take the album and the gals and one lovly boy at face value and like it for wat it is. the cello isnt the easyest instrument but this album brings it to an unbelievable level i love it.

This is such a beautiful album. I heard it all on the emily strange site. It's strange and cute with nursery rhyme qualities. It's so delightful. I can't wait until it is released. How exciting. This is definetly an album to treasure. Heehee. It makes me as happy as the day is long.
