5.0 out of 5 stars A family with an ancient curse....., 16 Oct 2006
Let me start this review by saying having read all the other reviews on this book, I felt like I had to write one for anyone like me, meaning, for anyone who has never read a manga novel or, for that matter, a comic. When I ordered this book, I was surprised to find that it was printed back to front, ( I have since learnt that this is in keeping with manga style of writing )and also it is not just plain text.
It has comic like artwork and is read from right to left on the page, which at first I found a little off putting, but that aside, it's easy to adjust to and a wonderful book.
It's the story of a girl (Tohru Honda) who when recently orphaned, has the good fortune to be taken in by the Sohma family, but before long she discovers that the family is cursed with a awful secret...
When any of them become weak, or when embraced by memeber of the opposite sex, they change into the vengeful spirits of the chinese zodiac!
But much more than this it's a story of friendship, love and learning to see more in people then they can see in themselves, you will learn to love all the people in these books, the personality clashes are funny and at times, so sweet you could almost shed a tear, there is also plenty of laughs to be had, and you will find yourself routing for some person or another. I have so far read the first five books in the series, but have the next five on order already (yes, it's that good) this is generally a sweet story but there is enough darkness on the egdes so far to keep anyone who hates to much lovey dovey stuff, happy, and I have the feeling it will get even darker, given the story so far. For my first taste of manga novels, I have to say I love it, and would gladly recommend it to anyone looking to try one for the first time, it's even inspired me to look for other manga novels. A fantastic read, that will leave you wanting more, more more......

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Fruits Basket!!, 21 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Tohru Honda was an orphan, living with her grandfather, when one day fate kicked her out of the house and she was forced to take up residence in a tent in the forest. Little did she know that the land she was staying on belonged to the Sohma family, a clan of beautiful and mysterious people. After stumbling upon the teenage squatter, the Sohmas invite Tohru to stay in their house in exchange for cooking and cleaning. Everything's going well until she discovers the Sohma family's greatest secret: when hugged by members of the opposite sex, they each turn into their Chinese Zodiac animal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 9 Jul 2007
By A. Weaver "Thing Witch" (Somewhere in England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is less of a review and more like a glowing recommendation. My sales pitch. Fruits Basket is just so perfect I had to say something about it. I had to tell someone how much I love it. It really, really is as good as everyone here is saying it is. Every character is great. They are all drawn beautifully and all the dialouge is wonderful. It is funny and sweet, but serious at other times; though even the serious bits are sweet and so super cute!

The story involves Tohru Honda, who has been living in a tent for a week when she comes across a house owned by the Sohma family. Lets just say that the Sohma's have an interesting secret that they'd rather not get out!

The book follows Tohru and her interactions with the Sohma family. Three of them in particular; Yuki, Shigure, and Kyo Sohma. Because this is just the first vomlume it is primarily concerned with inroducing the characters and the setting but it is funny right from the get go. Seriously, I can not emphasize enough how funny this really is. You have to read it for yourself.

A really nice thing about Fruits Basket that seperates it from the other manga i've read is that Natsuki Takaya, the author, has provided a sort of running commentary of her writing it. Throughout the manga she talks about creating the characters, her hobbies, and provides information about the Chinese Zodiac, which features heavily. There are even instuctions on how to play a game that at one point the main characters are playing.

So that's it. I can't be bothered to write anymore because I want to read it again. This manga is brilliant and perfect. Buy it or your life will never be quite complete.
