Book Description

1 Aug 2011

Growing fruit at home is a delicious and altogether more enjoyable alternative to buying it in the shops. Mark Diacono offers a

practical and accessible guide to making the most of your garden and

what it has to offer.

The first part of the book is an A-Z of the different varieties of fruit, with old favourites like apples, cherries, plums,

blackcurrants, white currants, redcurrants, strawberries, blueberries,

gooseberries, raspberries and rhubarb as well as more exotic species like figs, grapes, cranberries,

Japanese wine berries and apricots. Each is accompanied by a photograph, with detailed advice on when and how to grow and harvest.

In the second part of the book, Mark gives straightforward guidelines on techniques like pruning

and training, as well as how to deal

with problems or pests. There is a section dedicated to growing under covers and in containers.

Introduced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and with 30 delicious recipes, beautiful, full-colour photographs and a directory of

useful addresses, this is the ideal reference for any aspiring fruit grower.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fruit for thought? 1 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have purchased all the River Cottage handbooks. For me, personally, this was somewhat of a disappointment but that doesn't mean that it would be for other readers. I find it light on detailed growing techniques for the various fruits and also on preservation and storage techniques. Again, this is a personal view. I do not think that it is the most helpful of books for someone planning to grow their own fruit - as I have done for many many years. That said, one is never too old to learn and on browsing through the book I have found some new ideas and fresh slants on things. I'm not saying don't buy it, but I am saying it may not be the only book that you need if you want to learn about growing your own fruit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jane Bookbrowser 18 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
My introduction to the work of Mark Diacono was "A taste of the unexpected", which I have enjoyed and will find very useful. Next I bought Veg Patch No. 4 in the River Cottage Handbook series which again I found a valuable addition to my bookcase. The chance to buy "Fruit" by the same author was too good to miss. Following the same formula as the others in the series it is well set out, nicely illustrated and gives useful charts such as the suitable companion plants. The recipes look really yummy.
Certainly a book worth owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars River Cottage 3 Oct 2011
By C. I. Smith VINE™ VOICE

A wonderful book filled with loads of useful information on how to look after your fruit trees/plants and how to get the best out of the plant.
The book explains about the traditional ways of growing fruit like the apple/pear tree grown in the fan or espalier,i like the fact that it is all down in easy to understand format not confusing or hard work to put in place.
The book is also good for starting your own small fruit garden,it explains how to do the work and how and what you would need to do before and after you have planted the fruit trees.
Well worth the money for a good informative book from people who really like growing their own, would recommend.
