Still their best 25 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
'Fruit at the bottom' is the second release from the duo after leaving The Revolution, it was released in 1989 originally a 10 track cd and vinyl lp. It was then re-released as an extended version with 14 tracks later in the same year and after the three singles. The cd opens with a bit of radio station surfing seemingly through American fodder only for the listener to opt for the brooding funk that is 'Lolly Lolly' which turned out to be the second single.
The first single was the highly anticipated 'Are you my baby', highly anticipated by Prince, Wendy and Lisa fans and myself, on the day of release I clearly remember holding that shrinked wrapped copy of the 12" on Oxford Street outside HMV wondering for an hour all the way back home what it sounded like and it was not disappointing in the least, it got so many plays it reminded me how much I hated that ultra thin Virgin vinyl.
'Satisfaction' was co written by the legendary Time member MPLS producer Jesse Johnson, the drum programming is a trademark sound of his and he can be heard on guitar and vocals at the end of the song as well, his non appearance in the video is still sorely missed.
From here on the cd elevates to what Wendy and Lisa are good at which is song crafting... 'Everyday', 'From now on' and my probably my favorite 'Tears of joy' with it's lines like 'Hello is such a strange way to say hello' and it's everyday sentiments all wrapped in their meticulously woven W&L sound. The way 'I think it was December' opens you would think it was the last song with it's lingering gospel like keys but you'd be wrong because this is swiftly followed by the roof raiser 'Fruit at the bottom', this track is best heard live and it's the only track which is permanently sealed as the lasting memory of seeing the band live at the Town and Country club (HMV Forum) in Kentish Town over 20 years ago.

Enjoy.
