5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!, 2 Nov 2008
This book has come at the right time, when food prices have risen but we all want to eat good food. There are lots of lovely recipes using pulses such as creamy lentils with cream, hummus, chickpea bake. Ideas for using the leftovers from a roast such as soups and curry (I made this yesterday and it was gorgeous) and an extremely good list at the back which each food and what can be done with it, which has given me lots of ideas to use that odd carrot or bit of cheese lurking in the fridge. I have all of Fiona's books but I think this will be the most used. Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars At last - a useful frugal book!, 15 Dec 2008
There are a lot of frugal/thrifty type books around at the minute, with lots of people jumping on the credit crunch bandwagon, but this is not one of them. Fiona Beckett has been a miserly cook for years and knows her stuff. The book looks stunning, but it's not a case of style over substance - there are some delicious frugal recipes in here. I've tried out the stilton linguine one for example which is great and very easy to do. Plus there are good tips on how to save money in the kitchen and use up leftovers etc. Excellent.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only average, 26 Nov 2008
By Tim Stewart (Humberston, England) - See all my reviews

Sorry, Fiona, a bit of a disappointment.

Contains too many recipes using more expensive ingredients. For instance, there is nothing on Gammon, Brisket, Hearts, Tripe, Oxtail or Corned Beef. Too much Salmon and Tuna, instead of Pilchards and Coley.

Why not make your own sausages, save money and avoid all those additives and preservatives?

There is far too little content on the use of pulses. What is wrong with a can of baked beans? Do we really have to look at the author's previous work for suggestions?

Feels like a mish-mash of ideas. Typographical errors - what ever happened to the skills of the proofreader?

An attractive book, but no more than average - there are others, which cover the subject matter better.
