Book Description

2 April 2013 Lake District Mysteries
'The question that haunts us all. Just what is it that drives someone to kill?' In Ravenbank, a remote community in the Lake District, Hallowe'en is particularly chilling. It is a time for telling the story of the Faceless Woman, a young housemaid brutally murdered in a nearby lane, her corpse discovered with a makeshift shroud frozen to her battered face. And five years ago, the tale became even more unsettling when another woman was murdered in exactly the same grisly manner. Daniel Kind, a specialist in the history of murder, becomes fascinated by the old cases, and begins to wonder whether the obvious suspects really did commit the crimes. While Daniel attends a Hallowe'en party in Ravenbank, death returns for a third time to the beautiful but eerily isolated spot. Once more, the victim is a woman - and once more her damaged face is shrouded from view. The latest horrifying murder presents DCI Hannah Scarlett, head of the Cold Case Review Team, with the toughest challenge of her career. Is the case linked to the two earlier killings - and if so, how? Hannah and Daniel join forces in an attempt to solve the puzzling mystery. But in doing so, both may be forced to confront ghosts from their own pasts ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense Mystery 2 April 2013
By Ionia Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Frozen Shroud is one of those novels that plays with your mind. Just when you think you have everything figured out and you begin to expect something, it doesn't go at all the way you thought it would. As an avid mystery reader, I appreciated this greatly.

There were some places in this book where I felt there was a bit too much dialogue and not enough action, but they were thankfully brief. Also, the dialogue was very well written and was exactly like overhearing a real conversation, so that helped. I enjoyed the story and the way the author created the townspeople was a fine example of plot and character development. The actions of the minor characters helped me feel closer to the setting and the main characters.

This is a book that features real literature. The wording is always eloquent, intelligent and fitting for the style of writing. The plot does not feel contrived and the development of the story has a natural seamless feel.

If you love a good mystery and beautifully crafted writing, this would be just the thing!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing non-mystery 11 April 2013
By Gallia - Published on Amazon.com

Despite the potential in the setting and plot, this mystery was disappointing. A large part of the problem had to do with the characters who were for the most part one-dimensional and/or stereotypical.
At times it was even difficult to differentiate between them since their voices seemed identical. None of them were appealing or interesting. As for the inspector, what was behind her failed relationship with one man and reluctance to form one with another? Another problem was the supposed police procedures which were were laughable. Surely an inspector would not divulge so much information to witnesses and possible suspects? I had an idea about the identity of the murderer fairly soon and was so sure with the third murder that I just skipped to the end to see if my idea was correct. It was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frozen Shroud 26 Mar 2013

The Frozen Shroud is a book I could not put down. Set in the Lake District of England in a small town called Ravenbank and people whose families have lived there for many generations. The three people who were could not have been done by the same person because the first one happened 50 years ago and the other two were within the last five years. The main cast of characters are all from different walks of life and different ways that they live . The story-line is well-written and I can't wait to read more by Mr. Edwards.
Thanks to Net Galley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read this book and I recommend it highly.
