4.0 out of 5 stars engaging and different, 25 April 2007

I found the movie to be very well constructed, it verges on the supernatural but not so much as to require to to suspend your disbelief. Shirley Henderson as usual gives a great performance, and the photography in some scenes, notably the beach, is superb. ALthough I agree with the previous reviewer in that the ending can leave you a little cold in that it is unresolved it also gives the film an extra dimension as it is quite unexpected. Well I don't want to spoil it but if you enjoy good drama it is well worth renting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting, 8 Aug 2007
By J. Parker "A UK viewer" (UK) - See all my reviews

Kath is emerging from her grief about losing her sister and goes on an emotional journey to try to find out what happened to her.

Shirley Henderson is wonderful in the role of Kath. The supporting cast is superb. It's beautifully shot. The ending is ambiguous, I have worked out what I think happened but others might disagree. It is not simply a "whodunnit" or even a "whether anyone dunnit" but a study of a young woman in pain and her pain is eventually transferred to someone else. That makes it sound a bit gloomy and I wouldn't claim it's an easy watch but it is a fascinating one. I would watch anything by this director again.

I understand why Fleetwood was chosen as the location but it is not as threatening as it might appear. Dangerous if you don't know what you're doing but actually a fascinating and quite a pretty place. You can also visit the trawler used in the filming, a real, old, working ship, now come home to Fleetwood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant Surprise, 15 Jun 2008
By jordan (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
I thought this film was brilliant. On the surface it is a quiet and subtle piece of work that focuses on a woman coping (or not) with the disappearance of her sister two years before. In actuality though, there is a depth that keeps revealing itself long after you've finished watching it. Today there are very few movies that I would bother to reflect on once the closing credits roll, but this is one of them. I also appreciated the ambiguity of the ending--I am so tired of movies that have been "dumbed down" for the mass market and spell everything out. Director Juliet McKoen strikes a nice balance between illumination and mystery. In addition, the cinematography is gorgeous and the acting is superb (although I must admit Shirley Henderson's little girl voice did grate on my nerves a bit in a couple of scenes). At times I found some of the accents a bit difficult to understand and the English subtitles helped.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a omplete waste of an 1 hour and a half
Was very interested to find out what happened; only to be disappointed. Hate films that don't end with a clear ending that leaves you guessing everything - utterly dull.

I read the reviews and was interested in viewing the DVD. The story never focused on one scene for long, it was constantly jumping from one scene to the next. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Leaves you out in the cold...
Engaging story but, disappointing ending. This one will lead you up the proverbial garden path and then leave you out in the cold.
