Ever year growing up, I watched a handful of Christmas specials. It just wasn't the same without them. Over the years, I've managed to buy all of them but one. For some reason, I never got around to getting Frosty the Snowman. I was recently given a set with this special in it, and it was nice to reconnect with an old friend.

This half hour animated show follows the adventures of Frosty the Snowman (voiced by Jackie Vernon). The story opens at a school on Christmas Eve. The kids are ready to go for Christmas, especially since a new snow if falling, so they are hardly paying attention to magician "Professor" Hinkle (Billy De Wolfe).

When they are finally free to go, they build a snowman. As a finishing touch, they put Hinkle's hat on the snowman's head. And thus Frosty comes to life. But his life is immediately in jeopardy since Hinkle wants his hat back and the temperatures are warming up. Will Frosty find a place where he can stay alive peacefully?

Oh what great memories I get while watching this short. The story is actually rather simple, but I always got caught up in it all over again as a kid. As an adult, I must admit I find the first part rather slow going. They recreate the song (sung by narrator Jimmy Durante). It was fun as a kid watching him walk through town. Now, I just want him to get in danger. I also have to wonder about Karen, the kid in the story, who just sets off to the North Pole with Frosty on a whim. But the kid in me screams that this is a kid's cartoon - stop over analyzing things.

The animation works, but it isn't top notch. This was low budget work from the 1960's. There are more noticeable jerks and pumps at times as the characters move.

Andrew’s Blu-ray Review: Unlike their other holiday specials, which used stop motion puppetry, Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass employed tradition 2D cell animation for ‘FROSTY THE SNOWMAN’ and the style of the animation for ‘FROSTY THE SNOWMAN’ is quite charming, since the filmmakers were aiming for the look of a greeting card brought to life, sort of like the story’s protagonist Frosty. The plot of ‘FROSTY THE SNOWMAN’ utilises the popular Christmas song as the inspiration for this animated tale. Taking place on Christmas Eve, ‘FROSTY THE SNOWMAN’ tells the story of a group of children that are being entertained in school by a third rate magician named Professor Hinkle.

I loved the original Frosty. It is great and brings back memories. However, I loathe the second film. I can't find a single good thing to say about it. The animation isn't even as good as the original, although it was made decades later. Unfortunately for me, my kids have taken over the DVD, so every time they watch the original, they go on to watch the second one. Yeck. This taints the whole experience for me, but I'll still give the DVD four stars. The original Frosty is worth it.

The five stars are actually for the original "Frosty the Snowman" featured on this DVD: a charmingly simple, captivating and funny Rankin Bass cartoon from around 1968 (see also their Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer [Includes Destiny's Child CD] [DVD]). Unfortunately, "Frosty Returns", made some 25 years later and which also appears here, tries far too hard to be clever and switched-on with the odd "knowing" gag for the grown-ups. It succeeds only in being overly complex, cliched and completely charmless. And if you think this is the opinion of a Grinch-like grown-up, my two discerning children also preferred the original! (Also highly recommended as a pretty faithful, entertaining and child-friendly take on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is the excellent Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol [DVD]).
