This is the first Moeller book I've read so I can't comment on his usual standard of story-telling.

Judging by the number of books listed on his Amazon page I suggest he goes more for quantity than for quality.
The tale is enjoyable within the genre and if you enjoy interminable scenes of combat where the hero devastates various evil hordes with his steel-loaded quarter-staff, on a very regular basis, then this is the book for you.
Personally I prefer a more Abercrombie-ish style of combat where everybody takes a bit of harm and the hero manages to bleed too.

Pity really, this has the making of a good tale series if only the author would get down to writing with considerably more seriousness and depth.

I am about to start the second book of the series, but am not expecting much more from the second than I got from the first.

Second in the series, which no doubt will eventually contain many books judging by Jonathan Moeller's incredibly high output. Its five years on from events in the prequel. (I wasn’t expecting that). Our Hero, Ridmark Arban, is giving himself a harder time than his enemies and adversaries. He's a religious knight who standards are too high even for himself. While others may have forgiven him, he can’t forgive himself. This results in his taking great risks in the hope he will go down fighting. (Great stuff). The author throws in a few twists and some nice characterisation. It seems to be another start at point A then follow the dotted line to point Z, kind of tale, except Jonathan introduces the hint of a love interest with a woman who is suffering from amnesia, but who suspects she may have a hidden wealth of dangerous knowledge, mainly due to the fact pretty much everyone she meets seems to want to sacrifice here to get that knowledge, if only she could remember what it was. But not our hero, his knightly code means he must forestall anything else on his agenda, like getting himself killed by taking on impossible odds. No, he has to save and then rescue her, while not getting himself killed while taking on impossible odds. It’s a very pacey story with everything you need to keep you entertained. It’s well written, fairly well edited and as always with Mr Moeller the current story ends with many unanswered questions which means I will HAVE to read the next. Great entertainment, which is all I really want out of a fantasy novel.

A little lacking in bite compared to Moellers many other series.

A more D&D/Warhammer inspired story with traditional orcs/elves/darke elves etc.
IMHO Felt far more derivative than his other works.

I so want to read more! It's a new first course in a hopefully generous banquet of this new world. I'm starving!

It borrows a lot of it's lore and it's a little predictable. That aside its a very easy read.
