I ordered this book on the strength of "In the Empire of Genghis Khan" and was not disappointed. Stewart's humour is present, albeit smaller in quantity, but I suppose the Chinese are a less outlandish race than the Mongolians. Stewart writes with a great deal of passion for his subject, his narrative languid and satisfies all the senses. Necessarily, historical interludes are peppered with individual accounts of the grand folly that was the Cultural Revolution (and made depressing reading) but to his credit, Stewart avoided it becoming the main theme. In this, he remains impressively detached, as a perpetual traveller (probably) should.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to all who are interested in travelling, actual or armchair, through China.
