Product Description

Description
Teddy Thompson (the son of folk-rock icons Richard and Linda Thompson) had released two largely overlooked albums of smart, moody pop by the time of 2007's UP FRONT AND DOWN LOW. Unlike Thompson's previous albums, which featured all original material, UP FRONT consists of covers of classic country songs. To his credit, Thompson doesn't attempt to inhabit the down-home roots to which these tunes are tethered. Instead, he maintains his own cool, folky vocal style and gives thesongs new life via sharp, imaginative arrangements. In thisway, Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You" and George Jones's "She Still Thinks I Care" are outfitted afresh in a way that maintains the original beauty of the songs without straining to keep them overtly "country." Thompson throws ina piece of his own ("Down Low"), and invites a battery of guests stars (including Marc Ribot, Iris Dement, and his father, Richard), which adds variety and polish to this fine album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not so difficult 3rd album, 27 Sep 2007
By P. McKenna "petermckenna123" (Drogheda , Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I discovered Teddy Thompson through his work with Rufus Wainwright [who has an amazing string arrangement on this album 'My Blue Tears'. As a previous reviewer said, worth the price of admission alone].
His 1st eponymous album was criminally overlooked, and even after the success of his 2nd Separate Ways, it didn't do much business for him, a real shame, and if you haven't heard it, I'd sincerely recommend it as a near perfect debut album.
His 2nd album Separate Ways is a modern masterpiece, with not a duff song on it, and perfectly arranged/produced. It did bring a lot of attention to Teddy, and deservedly so. The songs contained on this album were mostly inspired [if that's the right word] by the break up of a long term relationship, lending the album a gorgeous bitter-sweet flavour.
So what about the 'difficult' 3rd album? I was surprised to read on his website when it was first mooted that he was going to do an album of country covers. I wanted more of the same, but he obviously needed to get this out of his system. He is a superb songwriter, not as grandiose or verbally clever as Rufus, but he paints fabulous word pictures in his songs.
So, this latest effort takes him into country, and I was a bit sceptical as to whether I'd like it or not [I'm not a big country fan]. I was won over immediately, as the mournful violins of the opening track Change Of Heart filled the room...gorgeous and then it was obvious that Teddy is in excellent voice here, and the arrangements are superb.
Its country without being too country if that makes any sense. I imagine he chose this set of songs for the lyrical content. The relationship break-up which fueled Separate Ways must still be stinging him a little [well a lot going by the lyrical content here..'I'm going to walk the floor over you' 'the worst is yet to come' 'down low' et al. The songs are all fairly maudlin, but don't let that put you off. Its an excellent album, and as previously said it might just act as a palate cleanser...or a heartbreak cleanser for him.
Just don't leave us waiting too long for the real 3rd album of your own songs Teddy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for country lovers.....honest, 18 Sep 2007
Difficult one this. Teddy's 2nd album (after his unjustly neglected eponymous first one) "Separate Ways" is one of my favourite albums of recent years. And I don't seem to be on my own in that. So just as he's getting critical acclaim, why do a country album? Writer's block? Presumably not as the only self-written track on the album "Down Low" is one of the best on here and fits perfectly. Rather I think it serves as something of a palate cleanser, rather like Costello's "Almost Blue". Something that needs to be got out of the system. And to be fair that was the turning point for Costello's voice - changing from the needling whine to the full on baritone. Not that Teddy Thompson has that problem as his mournful, melancholic voice suits the country subject matter perfectly. The only time it's misjudged is on the weak final track "Let's Think About Living". Thankfully the "hidden" track "Don't ask me to be friends" is possibly the best thing on it. There are also some fantastic harmonies from Iris De Ment and Tift Merritt to add to the country credibility. It's obvious he really means it, man. Finally one word about the excellent orchestration from Robert Kirby (and a sensational arrangement from Rufus Wainwright on "My Blue Tears", which sounds like it belongs to another song and is worth the price of admission on it's own). Yes it's pretty much straight country, but don't let that put you off. This is heart-felt, working-man's blues.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you never liked country music, you might like this......., 2 Aug 2007
By Harry'sboy (England) - See all my reviews
Not necessarily what you might expect for a 3rd album, but these songs have been carefully chosen and are sung with genuine feeling and respect for the originals. The production is warm and the arrangements are very sympathetic - Teddy's voice expresses melancholy and regret without the over-sentimentality that often spoils good country music. You might not be a great fan of country music, but this is good!

Just too mainstream, there are far more interesting things going on in the undergrowth - for a comparison I recommend Nick Worrall. His album is FREE to download as well.
