3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 28 Oct 2012
In contrast to all the glossy guides available for the New England states, Virginia isn't well served by tourist material. This book is a case in point - it certainly lacks the photographs you usually find in guide books these days.

The maps are also a weakness. The main one, inside the cover, uses a hard-to-read typeface and the ones inside are often quite small. Unless you know the state already it's hard to find information you want, as the chapters are assigned according to a rather arbitary division not reflected on the map.

On the plus side, the author has an interesting way of describing things and obviously has in-depth personal knowledge of Virginia. He has an especial relish for describing restaurant fare - I picture him as quite a rotund chap - though perhaps recommendations for fluffy biscuits with sausage gravy may bemuse Europeans.

Until the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide people catch up, this is probably the most up-to-date guidebook you can find, although it doesn't really do justice to Virginia. The unnamed civic building on the front doesn't help either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and informative! 20 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As ever Frommers have not let us down. We bought this book to plan a road trip through from Washington, through Virginia to New York, and it has been invaluable. We have been able to ensure that we see everything that we wanted to see, and in addition we have found some places to go that we did not know about. A very helpful book and one that we can wholeheartedly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful information, but no photos 25 Mar 2013

The information on this book is good, useful and interesting; but it doesn't have photos. As a visual learner, it's a little bit difficult for me to assimilate the information. This is why, I'm giving just 3 stars to this product. There are not many books about traveling & tourism in Virginia; therefore, if you are traveling to Virginia, this book is a good source of information and I recommend it!

I used this book as a guide on day trips to Charlottesville and to Richmond. I found that it gave me a quick and simple orientation to both cities.

travel guides are irrelevant quickly, so this has been nice to read through. mine from the library was 10 years old. I can never take a trip of any significance without a frommers, insiders guide, or fordors book. I read them like other people read novels. the attractions information is invaluable with the addresses, prices, and phone numbers.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great book to use to see all the sites around VA 5 Aug 2013

This is a great book to use as a guide for things to do in Virginia. I wish it were a little more current. Being a VA resident it is amazing how many historical and fun things there is to see and do in VA that we just don't do. I am hoping this book will continue to be a guide for our family to see and do all VA has to offer.
