3.0 out of 5 stars Information overload!, 26 April 2009
By Ms. Carrie Van der Zee (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first bought this book about 6 months before I went to Tokyo for the first time. I started reading it immediately and I thought to myself, "This is excellent, it's so informative!" I read it from cover to cover and kept dipping back into it in the months leading up to my trip.

However, when I was actually *in* Tokyo, it didn't turn out to be quite as useful as I'd initially thought.

The problem with this book is that, although it's full to the brim with really useful information on just about everything - from getting from the airport to the city on public transport, getting around, eating out, suggestions for unforgettable cultural experiences and suggested walks around areas of interest - it's too wordy to be useful when you're actually out there. Furthermore, there is simply *so much* information it's impossible to remember it all.

Whilst this book is interesting to read while you're tucked up in bed with a mug of cocoa and is certainly helpful in formulating ideas about where you want to go and what you want to see in advance, when you're actually standing in a busy subway station in Tokyo for the first time, for example, it's not easy enough to find the page that explains what the cheapest and easiest fare options for traveling on the underground are.

Although it's clear that the author writes with a real passion for the city and with a wealth of knowledge about it, which, again, makes for an inspiring read when you're at home on a rainy day, her writing style just isn't concise enough. Most of the information included in this book could have been presented in bullet points - instead it is presented in paragraphs.

In all, I think this book is a good read if you're planning a trip to Tokyo, you want some ideas on when/where to go and have time to sit down, read the book from cover to cover and take notes- but I don't recommend taking it with you when you go on your trip.
