4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of info - but not for the budget traveller! 24 May 2012
By Wynne Kelly TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
On the whole I was happy with the format of this book. It really didn't matter to me whether there were lots of glossy coloured photographs. It is more important to most travellers that the maps are clear and accurate and that information given is relevant and up-to-date.

The sections on the larger towns were very good and packed with interesting facts and ideas. However I would have liked some ideas for walking tours (as they do in Lonely Planet guides. The information offered on shopping, bars and museums was all really useful.

It is impossible to produce a guide book that will suit everyone. I looked for information on campsites but there was none - but plenty on very expensive hotels! But if you want to see puffins, buy a kilt, spot an otter, taste some whiskey or play a round of golf this could be the guide book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really like this Frommer's Guide! 15 May 2012
By Paul Madge HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This guidebook is thoughtfully laid out - it begins with a section on "The Best of Scotland" which covers all sorts of aspects including city experiences; local experiences; activities for families; drives; and castles and palaces etc. It then goes on to cover "Scotland in Depth" including its history and includes a calendar of events - this is very useful. It then goes onto suggest itineraries and has an activity planner as well for golfers, walkers and fishing etc. These initial sections provide an excellent backdrop for the rest of the book which then breaks Scotland up into 9 regions which it covers in considerable depth.

Each of the regional sections covers things like things to see; pubs; where to stay (split by cost) and provides an active commentary on the quality of food etc. there is also coverage of where to do various activities such as climbing, walking and water skiing etc. Where possible the book always gives prices which are extremely useful but will cause the book to become dated quite quickly. For the cities there is a very useful feature telling you what you should expect to pay for various activities including theatre seats etc. Each section is peppered with a generous number of clear maps together with distinctive panels with red boxing which cover topical issues such as The Stone of Destiny, historic drives; spots for birders and walkers etc.

It is obvious a huge amount of thought and research has gone into producing this book, and, that the authors have considerable local experience and insight. Combine this with a good layout and plenty of suggestions/information about things to do and I believe this book really will help you to get the most out of a trip to Scotland. We were thinking of going and this book has helped transform our interest into a firm commitment to visit later in the year.

Recommended if you are visiting Scotland from the UK or further afield. This book will help you get the most out of your visit, and, I don't think you'll go far wrong, or, get any nasty surprises about prices etc. with this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Middle Of The Road 8 May 2012
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
On the whole Frommer's guide books are informative and reliable (I recently
made good use of their splendid guide to Paris). The style of their Scottish
volume veers to the right hand side of the middle of the road. In identifying
an audience I feel that their focus, on this occasion, leans towards the means
of the comfortably-off motorist rather than for those of a more robust and
adventurous disposition. Nothing wrong with that of course but the cost of
the hotels and restaurants identified will be beyond the means of many.
(Neil Wilson's book for Lonely Planet Country Guides would, however, provide
a helpful addition to your journey). The maps and suggested destinations are
both lucid and helpful but the inclusion of a few photographs might have
brightened up an otherwise rather drab format. Look before you buy if you're able.
