From the Author

Normandy has long been one of my favourite parts of France, a country that I fell in love with in my early teens and have explored extensively since (and lived in several times too). So I was delighted to have an excuse to discover the region anew with my young sons, whether we were flying kites on the beaches of the Norman Riviera, feeding the chickens at a veggie guesthouse, exploring the atmospheric ancient abbey of the Mont St-Michel, or sampling the wonderful apple-based desserts and luscious local cheeses. It's my aim, in these books and elsewhere, to make planning a family break a little easier, and in doing so to help my readers have the best trip of their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 23 July 2007
By LOAM
I've recommended this guide to all my friends. A really thorough guide to having a family holiday in Normandy. Everything in it is considered from a family's perspective - eg. which attractions are best for older kids, which beaches are safe etc... this book really took the headaches out of this year's holiday. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide to the area! 28 July 2009
We bought this book prior to going on holiday to Calvados in Normandy and found it absolutely fantastic. At the start of our holiday the weather wasn't too great, however having this very comprehensive guide meant that we were able to plan our days before we set off and ensure that we had a great time. There were wonderful museums, a slate mine, a huge butterfly house and the best crepe place in Normandy all within 1 hr of where we were staying - none of which were mentioned in the "adult" guide we bought so we would have missed them. This guide is worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just brilliant 11 Aug 2011
Having bought several books for our forthcoming trip to Normandy at the end of the month I have to say that this book, without question, is the best of the bunch! Its written with parents in mind and is so helpful with suggestions for attactions and just general information about France and the French way of life. Were Planning a trip to Majorca soon and I'm hoping that they cover this too!

As I recently went on a trip to Normandy, with kids, this book seemed just the thing. But it is hard to find your way around. The book is ordered by reference to the 4/5 French departements - quite big regions in themselves - and then recommends attractions (classified by historical, active, etc), restaurants and accomodation within each region. The result is that, rather than looking at a relatively small geographic area and telling you what was nearby, you had to jump around the book to find things. Consequently we found it hard to find things more than once without marking the page.

Information about particular attractions could be quite dense and it was difficult to extract the pros and cons. Eating recommendations were often quite upmarket places where realistically a trip with young children was going to be an expensive waste of money. Generally a lot of the recommended attractions were pitched at school-age children rather than pre-school.

We also missed the historical context that you get with Rough Guides, Lonely Planet etc. Apart from a couple of boxes relating to particular attractions, there was very little.

The general Normandy information was fine, although typical driving times might have been helpful in the geographic overview.

On the plus side, we did get some good ideas for places to go - and the accuracy and quality of the information was fine.

So in conclusion, the book has most of the infomation you need (bar history), if your kids are seven or older, but you may not be able to find it!

Such a good guide and useful for when the weather is bad. We used it to plan longer trips and to visit nearby fun parks etc.
