Perhaps the perfect city guide does not and never will exist due to a multiplicity of reasons associated with what each tourist is expecting.

My guess is the average length of tourism stay in New York City is not much more than 3 days during which time the average visitor will want to see the 'famed' attractions such as Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, a walk across Brooklyn Bridge, a boat ride around the Mahattan Island taking in the Statue of Liberty, and, of course retail therapy at Bloomingdales, Macy's, Saks etc. Some nice meals and a Broadway show will complete the visit and will probably make you a "Gothamite" for life with return visits pledged.

This guide would be ideal for these purposes. It is relatively compact enabling ease of transportation, comes with a very sturdy fold away street map housed in a clear plastic wallet affixed to the inside rear cover, plenty of suggested itineraries, brief but adequate attraction descriptions, Dining, Nightlife and Shopping ideas plus general advice about the city, it's transport, it's outdoors and much more.

Have used it with satisfaction and can vouch that is about as close to ideal as it could get.

Having bought Frommer day-to-day guides before, I knew this would be a good purchase. Not as well-organised regarding themes as the Boston of SF one but that might because the city is so much bigger. The map was a life-saver and all information was 100% accurate. It is small, practical, gives lots of information and will take you past the most important sites and landmarks. The information regarding tours and ferries is also great as it offers several options for the same tour, giving you plenty of choice. I can definitely recommend this travel guide :)

This guide has been spot-on for my recent 3 day visit to New York. Pithy style with sufficient detail and good photos. Very useful map contained within. NY in one-two-three day sections particularly good for short visits. I really like this guide and am pleased I bought this particular one.

Really pleased with this book. Has lots of info about many things. Maps are easy to read . We are traveling to New York in October and have planned many trips with idea's within the book. My brother is meeting us coming from his home in Canada and wants a budget hotel near to us in midtown and now has quite a few to get in touch with the aid of this book

Very useful, practical and full of good inputs! I was in NYC for 7 days and used it the entire time! The little walks suggested around Greenwich Village, Central Park and so on really are worth it!

Have purchased this guide for an upcoming trip to New York. And although we haven't yet been I am extremely confident that this guide will be just perfect for the job. Having been to the library and borrowed a few other New York guide books I've opted to go for this one as I have used Frommers before ... actually own a few, Amsterdam and Rome included, and they are brilliant guides. Small enough to carry around easily and very informative .. and the included map is plenty detailed enough to use for getting around too. I doubt anyone would be disappointed with a Frommer's Day by Day guide for whatever city they are planing to visit.

Used by my daughter on a recent trip and highly praised by her.
Informative, well laid out and is pocket sized (unlike some pocket sized guides which seem to be intended for cave trolls).
Also a clear useful map.
