5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource 29 Dec 2011

This was an excellent resource which I highly recommend for walking tours. We had four days in Lisbon and this gave us all the information we needed to select what we wanted to do each day, including other wonderful sights outside of the city. While it did not provide the fine details for which buses, trams or trains to take to get to certain places, it was easy to find that out by asking the Reception desk or the Concierge at our hotel. Even if the book had provided those details I would not have trusted them as I have found schedules will change with the seasons and can be changed or eliminated by the time you arrive. If you have limited time, I highly recommend taxis to take you to the beginning point of your tour or to the train station if you are taking a tour outside of the city. Most hotels also will provide train schedules which are appropriate for the times you are visiting. The maps were an added bonus and very helpful. If you want an excellent resource and like to walk and see things first hand instead of from a tour bus, you won't be disappointed. Just be sure to take good walking shoes as this is a city of hills, but by walking you can go at your own pace and find interesting places by accident. Here is one good example. While following one of the walking Tours in this guide, we stumbled on an open house of the Republican Guard on a Sunday. The soldiers were in full formal dress, there were two floors of exhibits and a movie with English subtitles tracing the beginning of the Guard through the present time. My favorite, was the open courtyard in the center of the buildings with vintage automobiles, tanks and other vehicles used over the years by the Guard. Best of all, it was free and they were happy to see us and show off what they had accomplished.

I have bought several guides. This is the most useful as it is city specific. Comes with a good map. Useful tips for what to see whether you are in Lisbon for 3 days or two weeks. Includes surrounding towns outside thr city.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK 22 April 2011

I couldn't decide whether to give this book two or three stars. Pros: small (fits in most pockets), great ideas for neighborhood walks, makes deciding what to do a breeze depending on your interests (architecture, museums, kids stuff, etc. Cons: 1) leaves out too much travel instructions (for example, if starting a tour at the top of a mountain, please provide details on the bus that takes the reader to the top of the mountain 2) very poor layout of information (for example, you will find out in one walk that Vasco da Gama is buried at a particular monastery but if you are following another walk that includes that same monastery, that fact is left out. Which means, you must read the entire book to get the relevant info for your particular walk. 3) Lisbon, being a city of hills, can be a tough walk. The book should give the reader an indication of the amount of uphill walking that is needed for these walks. In the end I decided on two stars because I too often had to supplement this book with the internet and the vague travel instructions given cost me valuable time on my trip. However, I did not find a better source for walking tours of the city.
