About the Author

Rescued from provincial misery by football and punk rock, German–born Peterjon Cresswell turned to Europe for work and inspiration. He has been on the road ever since. A graduate from the University of Westminster in Russian and French, he used long–term study trips in Provence, Kiev, a Russian monastery outside Paris and Leningrad to complete theses on the French football press and the underground music scene in the Soviet Union. After joining an English–language publication, Budapest Weeks, he has since spent the last two decades working freelance in the region, covering sport and travel in Poland, Croatia, Germany and Slovenia. He also writes for the Guardian, the Observer, www.uefa.com, World Soccer and a slew of in–flight magazines. Krakow Day by Day is his first book for Frommer’s.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good a guide as any ! 21 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This is indeed a very good book. It is the most up to date I've seen (June 2009) and packed full of useful info. Quite a good waterproof map in the back cover as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Krakow visit 2010 1 Sep 2010
By Roamer
Format:Paperback
Krakow is well worth a visit and this is a great guide and mostly accurate.
However, the Schindler factory tour is worth a visit - whilst the building facade is bland the interior is a really good walk through war time Krakow with quality exhibits..the guide needs an update on this.
Castle is a must visit! Try to avoiod queuing to purchase castle tickets by going early / or at off-peak time.

Agree that the river cruises sold to castle visitors are a 'miss' - not really worth it as river frontages are not a feature here

Krkaow Balice airport - hint... don't go airside until necessary as there is ittle shopping or amenity there! landside has better amenities!

4.0 out of 5 stars cracking Krakow 2 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
We did not follow any specific suggested day walks, but rather pot-shotted as a general guide. Book slips into a pocket easily and has an all important removable city centre map, essntial for initial bearings and directions when freshly arrived. As with all guides, this one is out of date before hitting the printers, some quoted free visits now being charged, but charging in Poland is not like admissions in the UK, you won't need a months wages! Some useful points of interest were followed and on balance the book was useful. Probably not as full of info as a 'Lonely Rough Planetry Guide' but they can be bulky and not so easily carried in these days of minimalist cabin luggage. Does the job for a city visit perhaps 3-5 days, worth carrying as it is unlikely to break the bank or your luggage allowance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great maps and information 28 Aug 2009
By Rebecca Hiester - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This tour guide offered the right amount of information for a wide variety of attractions, restaurants and shops. Even walking with a tour guide, I found myself referring to the book for little extra bits of information. The maps were also so helpful that I rarely needed the large, pull-out map. The map just inside the cover, and then individual maps for the tours were detailed and easy to read.

The only possible complaint would be information on how to start the tours. At the start of each section it would say the tram stop, but that stop wasn't located on any of the maps. Overall, however, I will be looking for more "Day by Day" tours when I have another chance to travel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs revision 26 April 2010
By Brenda Harms - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I visited Krakow last weekend and was disappointed in this guide book. The book is more of a "to do" list and provides little historical context. I wanted to use the shopping section but three of the four stores were no longer in those locations.

The bicycle tour ([...]) was a far better value for the money. The five-hour tour covers many of the sites recommended over the three-day plan. I was informed and entertained. The guide provided plenty of suggestions for the rest of the stay (places to eat, visit, and play in Krakow) and the following weeks (movies and books).

In hindsight, I should have packed the handy map and left the book at home.
