About the Author

Sylvie Hogg (chapters 1, 4, 5, 6, 12, and 13) has been dutifully traipsing the bel paese, in the name of research for American and British travel guides, for the past decade. The Eternal City and all things ancient Roman are her fi rst love, though she also confesses a serious weakness for the natural splendor of the Bay of Naples and the wine of southern Tuscany. She lives in Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, Tim. They had their fi rst child, a bambino, in July 2009.

Stephen Brewer (chapters 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, and 16) is an editor and writer who has worked in magazines, books, radio, and corporate communications for almost three decades. He had his fi rst sip of a real cappuccino in Rome in the early 1970s and has been savoring the pleasures of Italy ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite guidebook 28 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Frommer's Italy Day by Day is my favorite guidebook. Hands down. And I am a guidebook nerd-- I love them. I have been to Italy many times and recently purchased this to research Sicily in advance of a summer holiday there.

I have to say that I have found the book incredibly useful-- it is full of facts and handy information but most importantly is incredibly practical for planning a trip with all of the "best of" itineraries and the beautiful photography to illustrate it and help decide what you want to see. The sidebars and conversational tone also mean that it is entertaining to read, which is rare.

I was not previously familiar with the Day by Day format, but I will be purchasing these from now on. I hope they are all as good as the Italy version!

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful 17 April 2012
By K. Wright VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
'Frommer's Italy Day by Day,' is a weighty, in-depth and full colour book filled with maps, photos and information on every aspect of your trip, split into sixteen chapters. 'The Best of Italy,' is a great place to begin with lists such as best ancient ruins, most scenic drives & rides and favourite Italy moments. Each of these places/experiences then is linked to a more detailed review later on in the book. This is followed by `Strategies for Seeing Italy,' with 10 top tips to help you make the most of your time. The next section, The Best All-Italy Itineraries,' gives 5 tours of Italy, whether you have one week or two and would like to discover the north or south, there is plenty to whet your appetite here.

Chapters four through thirteen are each devoted to one particular city or area of Italy for those wanting to explore Rome; Florence; Tuscany & Umbria; Bologna & Emilia-Romagna; Venice; Milan, Lombardy & the Lakes; Turin & Piedmont; Liguria; Naples & Campania; Sicily or in more depth. Whilst each section varies, they each present information about the best attractions on offer including art and architecture, museums, shopping, restaurants, hotels and nightlife. Each review is clearly laid out with the title in bold and a star rating system and key used throughout. The reviews usually give an indication of price, type of experience and tips about booking etc. Phone numbers and addresses are also given where applicable.

The next section delves into the history of the city as well as its architecture and cultural importance, giving more information than your average travel guide. The penultimate chapter, `The Best Special Interest Trips,' give details on a number of themed visits including language classes and food and wine tasting. The final short section gives a few tips on other things not previously covered such as tipping and useful phrases. There is also a pull out pocket map provided in a plastic wallet. Overall this is a thoroughly informative and well set out guide with clear information and maps. Recommended.
