5.0 out of 5 stars Itinerants in Istanbul 9 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
An excellent guide to a beautiful city. This was my first visit to Istanbul and I needed a guide that would give me more than bullit points. This was clear, honest, and amusing, particularly helpful for visitors of a certain age. With age comes a need for comfort as well as the illusion that we are being adventurous. I found the walking tours very useful - this is a walker's city - sadly without clear street signs and accurate maps, and here the guide came into it's own. The restaurants reviews are very honest and accurate and the recommendation for a 'fish sandwich' at the Galata Bridge was well received. Of all the guides on offer this is undoubtably the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good companion 18 Jun 2012

We travelled extensively in Istanbul with this book but it was in the e-format on my Galaxy note. It had extensive information with history & everything. But the biggest disadvantage was the lack of pictures. We had another guide in the traditional format with lots of pictures, it was easier to visualize things hence we were going back to the traditional format on road.

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely useless for locating restaurants 10 Sep 2010
By Ithakan - Published on
Apparently, none of the earlier reviewers relied on the Frommer's maps to find restaurants as they wandered the city, or they would have noted that the maps in the "Where to Dine" section are not maps of restaurants reviewed--they are repeats of the hotel maps in the "Where to Stay" section. This is a case of incredibly bad editing that I wouldn't expect from Frommer's--and I hope Amazon discontinues sale of this defective version of the guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frommer's Istanbul 2008 24 Oct 2008
By W. Dillard - Published on
My husband and I returned from Istanbul two days ago. This guide is as great as the many other Frommer's guides. My only complaint is that the admission fees to many of the sites suggested are double the listed price in this guide. I was a little surprised given the fact that this book is a recent release. For example, admission to Topkapi Palace is listed as 10 TYL with an additional 10 TYL for entry into the Harem. The actual cost is 20 TYL for admission into the palace and an additional 15 TYL for the Harem which is located near the exit of the palace. By the time, we finished touring the palace the Harem was closed. I was a little disappointed by that. Overall, Istanbul is a fascinating city and this guide helped us explore the many layers of history. Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars useless 18 Aug 2013
By Ferret Downs - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My husband is Turkish, and I've gone to Istanbul four times. Each time I took this book, and I found it useless. The hotel and restaurant info was incorrect, for one. The maps were pretty poor. Yes, the book points out obvious things to visit in Istanbul, but all books on the topic do, as do many websites. However, the book uses the English names for things, and that's just not helpful. No one in Turkey is going to be able to tell you where the Blue Mosque is (and this book won't help you find it either). You need to know it's Sultanahmet.

Don't waste luggage space on this book. You're better off picking up a good map and list of attractions from your hotel.

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable and informative read 27 Jan 2011

This travel guide is both helpful and particularly fun to read. The author gives very interesting descriptions of Istanbul, so you are sure to get excited about your trip ahead of time. I found the suggested itineraries especially helpful in planning my trip, although the author overloads the days.
