5.0 out of 5 stars For the Newcomer to British Columbia... 8 Nov 2011

The Canadian province of British Columbia stretches from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean and includes the Pacific Coastal Range, Vancouver Island, the greater urban area of the City of Vancouver, and any number of beautiful interior valleys such as the wine-producing Okanagan. It offers a staggering array of hiking and walking opportunities at many levels of fitness and difficulty. "Frommer's Best Hiking Trips in British Columbia" is an introduction to those opportunities with a listing of 59 great hikes, selected across the spectrum of possibilities.

Like other Frommer's walking and hiking guides, this one provides breakouts of hikes by degree of difficulty and by other categories such as family-friendly or historic. Examples include easy strolls in Vancouver's Stanley Park and much more rugged hiking in the Canadian Rockies along the Continental Divide, such as the Lake O'Hara preserve. The rating system for difficulty, in this reviewer's experience, is reasonably accurate. Each hiking trip entry includes a sketch map and trail description, along with a change in elevation guide and pointers on when to go and what to look (or look out) for. This Frommer's guide also includes lots of practical information on British Columbia, including tips on where to stay and eat.

"Frommer's Best Hiking Trips in British Columbia" is highly recomended to the first-time visitor to British Columbia, and to recreational hikers. Hardcore long-haul trekkers and technical climbers should seek more specialized references.
