About the Author

Eric Peterson has been writing about travel for more than 20 years. Beyond covering the Rockies in numerous Frommer's guidebooks, he has also written about skiing, hiking, and other ways to get up and down mountains for such publications as the New York Daily News, Delta Sky, and his own Ramble series of travel books. When he's not on the road, he covers the arts, technology, and city-building for Confluence Denver, a 'hyper-local' website. Eric lives in Denver with his wife, Jamie, and their trusted canines, Mimi and Duncan. Don Laine has traveled and written extensively about the Rocky Mountains and Southwest since moving to New Mexico over forty years ago, especially the region's national parks and monuments. He has authored several Frommer's guidebooks to the region. Don lives in northern New Mexico.

Good for what it is 14 May 2014
By John Malone - Published on
Format: Paperback
The idea here is to provide all the essentials you need for the most popular parks in the West - places to stay, where to eat, and what to see - in a compact and affordable package... and in that, I think they succeeded. I've always prized the Frommer's guides for their opinionated, but fair coverage, and that's intact here. There's also a variety of hikes for all ability levels (my personal favorite way to experience our parks), each rated 0-to-3 stars for scenery - always good to have, and hard info to find otherwise.

Driving times are provided for the parks covered, but as another reviewer mentioned, Crater Lake NP is not (a strange oversight, in my opinion, and one of the few negatives - feel free to treat this as more of a 4 1/2 star review). Other national parks not covered are North Cascades in Washington; Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Great Sand Dunes in Colorado; Theodore Roosevelt in North Dakota; Lassen, Channel Islands, and Pinnacles in California; Great Basin in Nevada; Saguaro and Petrified Forest in Arizona; Capitol Reef in Utah; and Big Bend in Texas (I believe Wind Cave in South Dakota and Guadalupe Mountains in Texas get mentions, but not full coverage). These are smaller, less-visited, and/or less-accessible parks to be sure, but omissions nonetheless.

Still, if you're planning a grand tour of iconic parks and spending a day or two or three in each, this book will get you there. It's easy to tote around and it's a pretty decent deal. If you're spending more time in a given park, though, you'll want something more - "Your Guide to the National Parks" is a good multi-park alternative (but bigger and heavier), and there's tons of in-depth guides out there for Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone - I personally like Lonely Planet for comprehensiveness, and the Moon or Falcon guides for hikes.

Where is Crater Lake? 5 May 2014

Nice guide but incomplete. How can they call it National Parks of the west and leave off the only National Park in Oregon? Nice maps with distance between parks for a road trip, but I want to know distances including all the parks in the west.

perfect for planning trips to major parks 5 Jun. 2014
By Michelle L. Frederick - Published on
Format: Paperback
I bought 4 books to help plan our family road trip to 10 national parks this summer. This book contains all the parks we plan to visit, and I can hnoestly say it is comprehensive yet sifts through all of the details and info to the most pertinent info. It is the one book that will stay in my purse the whole trip. I can' t recommend it enough if the parks you plan to visit are included. It is the one book I wish I had found first. It would have helped me get my bearings much quicker. Best $$ spent on guide books, and very helpful in planning for a family trip.
