For our recent trip to Cuba we decided to buy a Cuba guide for our Kindle, since we assumed that using the Internet might be a bit of a challenge and we were right. So, after reading some reviews of other books we decided to buy this one. The Frommer's Cuba Guide seemed to have all the information one requires to travel to Cuba and as it turned out the information provided as far as prices and most other information was concerned seemed to be correct, but that is probably all the good things one can say about this guide.
The facts that the guide omitted seemed to be some of the more important ones: a) Things change fast in Cuba should have been pointed out in the guide as a warning and either we missed that warning or it wasn't in the guide. The Che museum for example wasn't open when it was supposed to be open. Getting cash wasn't as easy as the guide seems to make it sound and there was no information about departing by plane from Havana for example, which turned out vital, since we ended up at the wrong terminal, despite asking various people several times and even at the airport there was confusion. None of these points were highlighted in the guide. b) While the guide seemed to cover all major aspects of Cuba like accommodation, history and so on it was poorly organised. Sometimes information was spread over various parts, i.e. some of the relevant information would be in the first few paragraphs and then some more later in the chapter. This doesn't make it easy to quickly look up something. Also, it would have helped if things like accommodation would have been separated from history of the various places, since one usually doesn't look this up at the same time and accommodation information tends to outdate quicker then historic facts for example. c) The maps in the guide were quite useless and the kindle version seems to be even worse. When do publishers realise that while the same content can be sold as print and ebook version it would sometimes help to make some minor adjustments?
All in all I would rather recommend to get a guide that focusses on the history and background information of Cuba, get some good maps, plan your trip upfront through a number of websites online and you should be covered, but don't rely on any of the "classic" travel guides when it comes to Cuba.
