About the Author

Born and raised in Pwllheli on the Llyn Peninsula, Jos Simon ventured into the world beyond Snowdonia as an LSE student in mid–60s swinging London. Having married a Greek, he embarked on a teaching career in various parts of the UK, his life enriched by Greek in–laws, Greek food and Greek holidays. Early retirement brought new challenges as a freelance travel writer, specialising (of course) in stories about Greece. As a result of continued Hellenic touring, with children, then alone, then with grandchildren, writing about Greece for UK magazines, and researching this book, he has come to feel like an honorary Greek.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide to Crete you will need 10 Mar 2012
By Rob Payne TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Rather than bombard the reader with information that they don't really want or need, this Crete 'Day by Day' guide from Frommer is highly readable and has a rather personal and friendly approach to the writing; ideal reading for someone who has never visited the island before, wishing to see the best it has to offer. To my mind it is more useful than the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet equivalents.

The guide is thoughtfully and neatly divided into useful sections covering Special Interest Tours, Urban Tours and Tours by region including ancient, modern and natural attractions, with advice on places to dine and places to stay. There is advice on how to plan your trip to see the best of the island whether it be a short trip or a much longer holiday and the final section is full of useful information such as weather, local customs, language, travel information and a potted history of Crete. There are a couple of useful maps in the back of Heraklion and Chania, the two most populated cities.

All things considered this is an excellent guide; concise, easy to navigate, entertaining to read, inexpensive and an ideal reference book to take away with you on your trip. I doubt you will need another guide. Bon Voyage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and Informative Guide Book 21 April 2011
By Jonno
Format:Paperback
This is a good little guide book. There is plenty of information on places to visit, where to stay and even where's good to eat!! The handy pull-out map is a great idea too.

This book mentions lots of interesting places to visit, but it also tells you about Crete's history too.

In addition to this, it also talks about the more practical things like, bus routes, taxis, banking hours, insurance, police, etc.

In short I found this great in planning how and where I'm going to visit on my holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide but avoid restaurant recommendations 12 Jun 2012
By Mrs B
Format:Paperback
Fantastic, pocket-sized resource with lots of useful information - we used it all the time and couldn't fault it for its tips and recommendations on places to go... except for the restaurants. We went to their top recommendation in the Venetian harbour in Rethymnon (Palazzo) and were practically robbed by the restaurant who charged an unbelieveable amount of money for a single-course meal. Top tip if you are visiting - beware the 'tourist tax' added by unscrupulous restaurant owners in the more 'touristy' areas and don't go for anything on the menu, like fish, that is charged by the kilo - it's too late to quibble when you have eaten it! I would definitely suggest you take this book but use TripAdvisor for up-to-date restaurant recommendations.
