About the Author

Christina Paulette Colón ′s great passions in life are nature and travel. With a Ph.D. in ecology, an MA in environmental education, and a string of publications, she is an academic, an educator, and an author. When not exploring tropical rainforests, coral reefs, or sandy beaches, she can be found exploring the wilder side of New York City, which she calls home. 3.0 out of 5 stars book for american travellers 16 Feb 2009
By ammber
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book as i'm going on my first cruise (to the caribbean) in Ocotber. The book as some good points, and general overviews of the caribbean islands, but it is written for the american market- with a large section of the guide dedicated to american ports. I felt the other aspect that let it down- lack of photographs (there are none!) I'll still take it with me on my trip, but i need to get a book for the english market.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK but too American 20 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm going to the Caribbean on a cruise in a few weeks and the only guide books I could find in the shops were either for specific islands or were general guides rather than cruise specific ones, and I really wanted a book which would tell me where the ship docked, etc

This book is OK but it is exclusively aimed at the ex-US cruise markert and about a third of the book is directed at how to get to the US cruise embarkation points, hotels to stay in, etc which are of little relevance to UK fly cruises.

The language is very US-centric, and the main UK cruise companies (P&O, Cunard etc) are completely ignored from the listings.

Overall the book is pretty poor - it is on very poor quality paper with no illustrations and only generic diagrams of each island rather than detailed maps of ports.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frommer's is the king, but the this is a retread. 17 Dec 2007
By Salvatore Dragone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While Frommer's is the king of travel advce and I have sworn by thier advice and knowledge while traveling, this particular eddition is no better than 2005 or 2006. It is a re-tread. So if you have a version from 2006 or 2005, stay with it. There is really no new information worth spending the money on. While I do not realy fault Frommer's for using old information, since not much changes in the caribbean, it should be more clearly noted that there is not much new in thier book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caribbean Ports of Call 22 Jun 2008

Format:Paperback
Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frommer's Caribbean Ports of Call 9 Aug 2009
By Alamo Jim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A useful book for planning visits to Caribbean islands. I am using this with the descriptions of my cruise ship's shore excursions: Do I want the shorex, or do I do the sightseeing on my own? The book also gives opinions on what is worthwhile to see and what isn't...which you don't get from the cruise line (everything is worth seeing). The recommendations on what to buy or not buy at each stop are also worthwhile.

The acid test for this book will come when I take the cruise: were the recommendations good or not?
