4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Helpful Guide packed with information 29 Mar 2012
By Anne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have to be honest. I usually pick Lonely Planet Guides when I'm thinking of making a trip. I love the personality and fun information they include. But, when I saw this guide for Boston by Frommer's, I was curious about it. My husband and I want to make a weekend trip up to Boston and I want to find out what we can do. I find that the internet can be an overwhelming source of information for me so a guide can help me narrow down what we should do more easily.

I like this guide. It's very different than LP guides. There's more information packed into it. There's a great map included, maps on the inside front and back covers, and maps scattered throughout the guide. I like maps because they help me get my bearings. GPS can guide me, but it doesn't give me an overall sense of place. As far as the information goes, I found tons of sights I'd like to go to. I liked that they included sights, restaurants, and lodgings for different price ranges. I hate it when a guide only includes expensive lodging and food or only the cheapest options. I like to pick and choose based on what's important to my husband and me and based on what we want to spend our traveling funds on.

We have 3 kids and I was thankful that both adult and family-friendly options were included--for lodging, sights, and food. Although our first trip to Boston will just be my husband and me, I do want to take our kids later.

All in all, I like this guide a lot. It'll be a great companion to have along on our trip!

5.0 out of 5 stars best tour guide - a must when in Boston 12 May 2012
By sandy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I spent Sept. through Dec. of 2011 living in Boston. I bought the 2011 addition shortly after arriving in Boston and used the book almost daily. The book was my tour guide throughout those four months and never let me down. It was an invaluable help in getting around town and learning what to see and do in Boston and the surrounding small coastal cities. And I met the author, Marie Morris! I was standing on a corner in the North End (the Italian district and one of my favorite areas!) with the book under my arm (Yes, I really never left home without the book) when Marie approached me and asked if I had any feedback. No negative comments here, just thanks for writing a great book. Turns out that Frommer's authors must live in the city that they write about and it is evident by the product they produce. I recommend this guide and the next time I need a tour guide book, I will be sure to purchase one published by Frommer's.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Boston Guide 19 April 2012
By David Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I'm in Boston a lot these days for medical reasons, but often the whole family comes and we make a day of it - sightseeing, eating, etc. This is the best of the 4-5 guides I've tried. It's incredibly thorough and divided up nicely so that you can find what you need even if you're unfamiliar with the various neighborhoods and sections.

I'd like to especially note that the restaurant guides are dead on: I've eaten at roughly 30-50 places in various sections of Boston and if Frommer's says it's good, it is. They're pretty fair about the pricing descriptions as well.

I'm not sure how much help the huge, fold out map is, since most people are walking around with handheld GPS on their smartphone these days, but it's really handy to study beforehand because it helps you get a great feel for the layout of the city and proximity of the places you plan to visit (something that's clunky at best on Google Maps, etc.).

I've got trips planned for New York, Philly, and Providence soon and I plan to pick up a Frommer's Guide for a few of those, based on how good this one is.
