Stephen Brewer is a writer and editor who has worked in magazines, books, radio, and corporate communications for more than 30 years. He visited Athens 20 years ago, decided he found his place in the world, and has spent part of each year in the city ever since. He is also a co–author of Frommer’s Greece Day by Day.
This was great for my weekend in Athens. The layout & the colour photos whet your appetite for your trip. I liked the day planners - not because I needed to have the day planned but because it gave an idea of what was possible to be done in a day & I mixed & matched. It also includes has a number of walks. The size of the book makes it ideal for carrying around. I have only given it 4*s rather than 5 as the tourist map that came with it should be more detailed - it was too easy to get lost after having gotten your bearings less than 2mins previously. (My husband thought it was my fault & took over the map reading - we still got lost.) Also it needs updating as the info on public transport prices is no longer current.

This book was all I used for three days in Athens and it was great. I hit two restaurants, one doughnut place and a coffee shop that the book recommended, and all were dead-on. The restaurants were notably better than those I found on my own. Advice on museums and sites was solid. Most importantly, the book marks locations on maps by section, so even if you can't find or read street signs, you can find what you're looking for. I used a different brand for Rome and had a much harder time getting around (indeed, I didn't find several of the restaurants that book recommended because it didn't label the streets on its map, much less show precise locations). I'd use the day-by-day series for any new city.

The Athens Day by Day guide book is, for me, the best available. I really like the large map in the back. It is detailed enough to be useful. Each section of the book has a page size map with coded markers for places discribed in that section. I like the concise organization with sections such as the "16 Favorite Moments" and "The Best in One Day", etc. The restaurant and hotel section is also helpful. Also, the general information in the "Savy Traveler" section is very useful information that I often use. I find all of the "day BY day" books to be very good.

Lots of things to do in Athens so how do you figure it out? This book will help. It gives you all the major sites and things to do and it gives you all kinds of great ways to set up your sightseeing either in daily treks or in multi day treks. Highly recommmended. I really used this book. I used the various recommendations to plan out my own itinerary.
