5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative reader friendly bok 21 Mar 2012

I have been to Amsterdam several times in the past and just visited the usual touristy spots. This book has made me realise all the things I still need to see and do the next time I go.

It is very informative and full of suggestions around one day tours (if you are short on time), or special interest tours (including Arts specific or if you have Kids etc).

The book also suggests a variety of walking tours which a lot of people enjoy, and finally also discusses good places to eat for lunch/dinner.

Amsterdam is built around canals, and the book covers some interesting history. There is a big bike culture in the city, so there are some useful suggestions of bike tours too.

For the price I would recommend this book.

We recently took this on a four day trip to Amsterdam, and while it proved useful at times due to the amount of information contained, we regularly found ourselves referring to the Everyman guide instead, as that book is much better organised and the information easier to access.

The guide is, to its credit, compact, easy to carry and hard wearing. The removable map is a nice touch, even though it doesn't cover the area around the NDSM wharf, where our hotel was. The information covers a wide range of topics and is reasonably detailed. The down side is the way it is structured. Rather than dealing with the city area by area, or breaking it down into sections such as museums or theatres, it tries to outline suggested things to do for the one or two day visitor. It makes the desired information very hard to find, and eventually we gave up on it, only using it for the handy phrase guide in the back.

We didn't think much of it, but it did have some useful features (phrasebook) that we used quite a bit, so three stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy and well written 27 April 2012

I really enjoyed this guide. Size wise it is perfect for taking away on a weekend, as space and time are both issues. This guide covers all the essentials in enough detail to help you pick out what will probably interest you. I've been to Amsterdam many times and believe it covers everything essential about the place. The flower market, the 'district', good bruin houses, the best shopping streets etc. In fact I still found a few new things to try out in here too. Only minus is I found one or two of the maps a bit lacking. More street names required as it can be a confusing city. Overall though a good, compact guide for a weekend away.
