Book Description

7 Jun 2012 Practitioners' Guides
For children to make progress in all aspects of their learning the practitioners who work with them must have a good understanding of what the child already knows and can do (assessment). They should be able to create activities that will take the children forward to the next step in their learning (planning). Finally they should measure the impact of those activities on the children's attainment (evaluation) and then the process can start again. The one crucial element that this model lacks is 'engagement'. Based on the fundamental truth that, you can have the best provision and the best resources in the world but if you have not got the engagement of the children that you are working with then the potential for high level learning is minimum to none. This book will show through practical examples how practitioners can move away from the more traditional model of teaching (as above) to one that maintains all of the essential elements but is driven by the most powerful learning tool of all - engagement.

Though not a huge book, I found some good ideas that have impacted my general day-to-day teaching- especially when planning! Our Learning Outcome is now always process not product based!

This book gives lots of really good ideas for fully engaging children in their learning. Easy to read and things you can put into practise straight away. I used this book to train my early years team and all were enthusiastic about the ideas it gives.

I have got so many ideas from this book giving ideas in detail about how to improve practice and although most of the ideas may be on his website in different places. I would say it is really handy to have in one refrence book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas but expensive 10 Aug 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good book for those new to ABC and his blogs but nearly everything can be got for free from the blog. It is handy to have a paper copy though. Only other downside is that it is so expensive.
