If you're looking to learn how to play rock guitar, then this book is probably the best one available. While most of the others are fairly dry, classically oriented, and seemingly full of pointless exercises, this new title has a much brighter look and feel. It makes the whole thing seem a lot more like fun and less like a dusty classroom. Fairly honestly, the book doesn't claim to teach you how to play in a few weeks. You need to practice. And then practice a whole lot more. Where this books scores, is in telling you what (and how) you should be practicing and what the pitfalls are. That the author has been a pro instructor for years shines through because all the explanations of techniques and styles are very clear and easy to grasp.
The book takes you from a total beginner to advanced techniques in a series of well structured chapters, covering everything from what kind of guitar to go for, how to hold it, how to tune it, what kind of pick would be better to learn with, what sort of practice amp to look for, right up to harmonics, scale sequencing, tapping, whammy bars, and some pretty cool licks. It covers everything a budding guitar player needs to get started on what will be a long road. If you're looking for a book with which to learn how to play rock guitar, this is the perfect choice.
Finally, when you get tired of practicing, just reading this book is fun because the pages are full of colour and there are lots of sidebars about well-known guitarists and the techniques they use.
As they say... it goes to 11 !
