Whether you choose the traditional route or wish to self-publish on-line, "From Zero to Hero: How to Make a LIVING Writing Fiction" contains all the advice and guidance you need to help you carve out a new career as a writer of fiction bestsellers.

Years of experience from Rob Parnell and the hundreds of authors he has worked with over the preceding decade has been lovingly collated into this essential guide for the aspiring novelist. Everything from coming up with ideas and compelling characters to structuring your plots; tips on point of view, show don't tell and creating suspense; all the way to publication and self-promotion, on-line and off-line, are dealt with, in detail, within the pages of this unique writing manual.

If success and making money - and soon - from your writing passion is your goal, then you need look no further than, "From Zero to Hero: How to Make a LIVING Writing Fiction." It contains a wealth of information on writing full-time: organizing your new life for maximum productivity, identifying your ideal genre, how to attract and keep your readers, and how to maintain a high-paying fiction-writing career over the long term.

Rob Parnell says: "It has always surprised me that of all my writing resources, the original version of this course was the most popular with professionals, who, I guess, could clearly identify with the lifestyle portrayed within its text. In this new Kindle version, I have completely updated and expanded on the original. (It's four times the size!) It's now much more than a writing resource to me, I like to think of it as a heartfelt homage to the profession, a book designed to inspire the next generation of authors who want to earn money writing commercial fiction."

This comprehensive guide is a genuine road map for fiction writing success.

In the last fifteen years, Rob Parnell and his wife (and soul mate) have had over one hundred and forty books published, in various formats, all over the world. They've even had screenplays optioned by Hollywood. Simply put, when it comes to writing commercial fiction, they know what works and Rob Parnell knows what he's talking about.

Here's an overview of what this personal masterclass covers in nine data-packed chapters:

Preparing to Write: What you need to do and think about before you start. The right kind of mental preparation will change the way you work for the better. It will help you write more professionally, faster and with improved focus.

Character, Plotting & The First Draft: How to easily create what you set out to do in the shortest possible time. How to make sure your work is going to be commercial right from the start. How to write with confidence, discipline and perceived talent.

Getting a Diamond Out of the Rough: Learn what every professional writer does to take a first draft to a publishable standard. How to use very simple rules to create compelling fiction that always works.

How to Publish and Maintain a Writing Career: The simple practicalities of what to do after the writing - to make sure you can continue your craft - and get paid for it, time and again, for life.

Along the way there's a detailed look at how to write good dialog, effective description, how to create drama, suspense and good action scenes, perfecting pace and lots of other practical issues like time management, career planning, motivation, discipline and how to become a better person through writing and creativity.

If you've ever wanted a complete writing resource that showed you exactly how to write quality fiction that sells, then this book is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best non fiction book I bought this year. 4 July 2014

Excellent book on writing. I love Rob Parnell books - they are clear and to the point but his personality and willingness to help other writers shines through. Easily one of the best non fiction books I have bought this year (and I buy a LOT of books).

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have known better! 18 July 2014

I never learn. These types of books are the usual repetition of advice that is largely common sense. No great revelations here I'm afraid. Clearly the mantra here is quantity over quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Rob Parnell 14 Jun 2014
By Nick Vulich - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There's a lot of great advice here about writing, plotting, developing, and editing your book. If I could choose only one line to summarize the book, it would be - "Don't think, write."

Thinking really does just slow the whole process down.

What I enjoyed most about the book was the last chapter - Rob's take on self-publishing, Amazon in particular.

So many authorities advise you the greatest thing is to join KDP and give away your book. Rob calls it like he sees it, a useless task. Your better off using Countdown Deals, where you can make money every step of the way, and drive more sales of your book.

He also has a good take on reviews. They're not as important as you may think. Take this book for example, it has one review, and is ranked under 5,000. Good reviews happen, so do bad reviews. Your book will sell either way.

Overall it's a good look at fiction writing, selling your books to traditional publishers, and self publishing.

I don't think you can go wrong for 99 cents, or $2.99.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing you can't find online for free 30 Jun 2014

There's nothing new here. Nothing. Everything that's talked about can be found on various blogs in various forms for free around the net. Rob Parnell claims that his wife and himself have made a living writing fiction, written over a hundred books between them, etc. However, there are only 4 items on his amazon author page that aren't "easy way to fill in the blank" books. Where is all this amazing fiction he earns his living from? Read blogs by writers who sell fiction and you can save your money on the "advice" in this book. Even the so-called template for outlining is nothing you haven't heard already.

5.0 out of 5 stars My novel is underway, thanks to Rob Parnell 20 Jun 2014

I've subscribed to Rob Parnell's newsletter for a few months now and I think his advice is second to none. This latest book combines the best of his writing exercises to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper with an insistence that you need to think like a writer on your way to becoming one. I love it that he tells you to make your next paragraph, next chapter, next transition, an "emergency." Tell your neighbor, husband, teenager that you can't possibly do whatever it is just now. You have an idea to get you over the crisis you created in that paragraph, chapter or transition, and simply must get it down on paper. It's vital that you do this. Women, in particular, I think, have a hard time clearing the decks, shoving everything else aside, in order to get the damn thing written. And Rob Parnell says we have to go for it.

Each of his books fills a need although he admits that there's a certain amount of repetition (especially in the introduction and first chapter or two of his books) because he wants to explain his philosophy of writing. But get beyond his explanation of philosophy and there is real advice here, tangible guidance that made me feel as though someone threw me a lifeline (all the way from Australia). For six hours on Saturday, I was creating character names and sketching in personalities. I wrote the ending of the novel at the top of the page (as he suggests) and began thinking about what events had to occur in order for the novel to end up where I have already decided it will end up. The simplicity of having a plan combined with the certainty that you are a writer is powerful and empowering.

Well, I've got to wind this up because I must write a new opening paragraph for my prologue tonight. If I don't get this haunting image of my murder victim out of my mind and onto paper, I may dream about it all night long. The novel I'm writing is pretty compelling stuff. And I'm writing it.

I read a lot of Rob Parnell's books on writing. This one was a little different and showed how he and his wife made it. I liked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips with these manuals 24 Jun 2014

I found this book, From Zero to Hero..... invaluable. Rob Parnell offers the best writing tips in all his writing manuals. So many times during a 'block' the easiest way to remove it, is for me to open one of Rob's writing manuals and review it. Like a genie popping out of a lamp, so many fresh ideas are suddenly there, coming too fast to even write them down.

At $2.99 this book is an invaluable asset to any writer, from those just beginner to those who are already published. Mr. Parnell's manuals are the best deal out there. Especially when he offers them for only .99 cents through his newsletters... but at $2.99 the price for what you get is completely insane.

If you have a great plot you will need a hero. This book can help you with the challenge of selecting traits that will encourage your reader to keep turning the page to see what conflict the 'Hero' can survive until the next page and conflict. Billie (reikiflow) PHD
