*** TOP THREE BOOK ***

In these twelve, atmospheric stories you are transported to an apartment in a leafy courtyard at the heart of Venice. Against a background of crumbling palazzos and remote canals are woven tales of tragedy, death and romance; a soul is lost in transit, a young blind woman from the eighteenth century learns to navigate the city by scent and touch, a proposal is long-awaited, an opera ticket changes the future of a whole family and a cat displays a keen sense of history. And always the essence of Venice is evoked, when light catches the rosy brickwork of the bridges, the flat melancholy waters of the lagoon chop around the boats and cobwebs of mist hang over canals on winter mornings…

5.0 out of 5 stars Venice beautifully described. 20 Dec 2013

A collection of delightful short stories, Venice is beautifully described in different lights, seasons and moods. The stories are well constructed, the plots are gripping and often contain a twist. The link between the stories is the courtyard but also the characters who leave behind traces of their previous presence or who sometime can be seen only as a face in a window to later be the character driving a story. Enough said! I strongly recommend this book, read it and let's look forward to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories you can't stop reading 13 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase
I bought 'From A Venetian Courtyard' because I love Venice but never expected the 'feel' of Venice to come over so well. I could actually picture the canals, palaces etc. It's not a tourist read at all - the stories are extraordinary, really atmospheric but with a dry wit. I kept turning the pages. My best buy for ages! M.R.London

5.0 out of 5 stars Venice brought to life 17 Dec 2013

I loved these tales. They offer a tantalising feel for this wonderful city, wetting the appetite for a first visit or bringing back memories of the many locations and experiences from previous visits. The plots are never dull and lead the imagination in all sorts of unexpected directions. I shall return again and again to this book and look forward to the next collection from this author or even the development of some of the plots into full scale novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Variations on a Theme 24 Feb 2014
By michael

I really enjoyed this selection of short stories, variations in different keys and tempos, united by such a strong sense of place. Together with some fine descriptive writing the narratives do what all good stories should - keep you reading, to learn what happened next; and the characters, linked as they are in sometimes unexpected ways, stay in the mind long after the story is ended, as does Venice itself. A really good read. Makes you want to go there right away!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book 19 Feb 2014
I read this book on holiday and couldn't put it down. There are some fantastic, unexpected twists and the atmosphere of Venice is almost tangible. I love some of the character formations and wished that the author had continued each story. I highly recommend From A Venetian Courtyard.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully painted picture of Venice 9 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase
This book is beautifully written, painting very emotive pictures of Venice in every season. The stories are heartfelt and touching about real people in real situations. I would highly recommend this to anyone planning a trip to Venice or anyone wishing to bring back memories of a visit to the beautiful city. Having said that, the stories are well worth reading regardless of the Venetian connection.

What wasn't depressing was as dull as ditchwater. This book was just not my thing. Did remind me of lovely times and reinforced my desire to go back though.
