This album is the culmination of every single album ETID have put out. We all knew that the boys from Buffalo had the ability to make a mind shattering, legendary album, but they have never been able to reach the heavens as high as the gods of the genre, Converge (although, admittingly, they've been very close). Until now. This album is a juggernaut of sound that you hear coming from a distance on the opening track but you do not expect the magnitude of sheer brutality it carries with it until it barrels into you (the track aptly named 'the great secret'). The entire album chock full of the best Jordan, Andy, Keith and the rest have ever put out (no doubt due to Ballou's ability to bring it out of every band he produces albums for), but my personal favorites are Old Light and Moor. The former has layers of melodic depth and almost radio tune like catchiness, while the latter is an emotional catharsis for Keith (the vocalist has said it is about dealing with the ordeal of his wife's assault) that really shines despite being completely different from anything else on the album.
Basically, guys and gals, if the heavier parts of Converge's Axe to Fall and the tachycardic thrash of Bane's Give blood had a baby with every single ETID album simultaneously, the behemoth that would emerge from this unholy act would be From Parts Unknown. Do yourself a favor and present yourself as an offering and let the album do its worst with you.
