While there is no shortage of people jockeying for position in line to condemn Luc Besson, there's no denying the entertainment of his action movies. Over the past ten years the man has given us Kiss of the Dragon, the Transporter franchise, and Taken. These movies will never be up for any major awards but they are still worth the money and time for action fans.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers plays James Reese, the personal assistant to the American Ambassador in France who does odd, low-level covert jobs on the side. He longs for the big leagues, and gets his wish (to the extreme) when he's suddenly partnered with the flamboyant Charlie Wax (an OTT John Travolta, who really seems to be enjoying himself). Wax has a mission in Paris, but he's keeping the full details from Reese, gradually letting him further into the tangle of twists as the elaborate story unfolds. Racking up a body count of more than one an hour in the process.

The Travolta/Meyers double-act mostly pays off, but, like Reese, the audience is left out in the cold for the duration. Meyers doesn't do much but stand aside while Travolta rampages through posses of bad guys. I know he's the 'everyman' we can identify with, thus giving us a smoother insight into the world of espionage, but if he was just given a tiny bit more to do than stand around wide-eyed and frightened the film would have gotten a higher rating from me.

As 90-minute fluff we're talking serious entertainment here. If you're wanting more profound film-making look elsewhere (not that Besson is incapable of this either). From Paris With Love doesn't rewrite the rules of the action or spy genre, but it does play every expected note loudly and maniacally. Exactly how many films have a bald, goatee-sporting John Travolta hanging out of a car window talking on the phone in one hand with a giant mofo rocket-launcher in the other?

The Blu Ray features a great 2.35:1 1080p picture with DTS HD-MA sound. I am not sure about how it sounds on other home theater systems, but my copy was rife with strange audio fluctuations. Extras are modest.

From Paris with Love features John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) as Charlie Wax, a rather two-dimensional, gung-ho CIA operative, who despite his complete lack of professionalism seems to have a knack of getting the job done. He is tasked with eliminating a drug-fuelled terrorist cell in Paris, where he is partnered with a low-level CIA embassy staff (James Reese - Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who struggles to keep pace with Wax and his unorthadox playbook. The film features a few great action scenes where it is easy to just sit back and enjoy the carnage without getting caught up in potholes of the rather flimsy plot. Travolta seems to relish his role as the brash agent Wax, despite it not requiring a great degree of flexibility (He wears the same outfit the entire movie and seems to be in the same laissez-faire frame of mind regardless of the situation) but the honest surprise is Meyers (Match Point), who single-handedly carries the whole movie with his acting and deserves a lot of credit for saving the entire thing from the precipice.

The film - despite the weak content - is beautifully directed by Pierre Morel who uses the beautiful back-drops of Paris to great effect. The film flows seamlessly between action scenes and discourse and feels very fluid. There is even a little nod to Tarantino by including the 'Royal with Cheese' reference that was championed by Travolta in Pulp Fiction. In conclusion, this isn't a bad film, it's just intensely linear and you will have seen many of the plot devices before, it brings nothing new to the table, but it will kill 90 minutes.

The DVD features some deleted content (a couple of scenes and some gaffs) and a making of featurette with some pretty funny Travolta behind-the-scenes pieces.

From Paris With Love 16 Mar 2010

If you take it for what it is (a fairly mindless yet action-packed thriller) then From Paris With Love is actually a pretty enjoyable movie.

The story is paper-thin and is about a low-ranking intelligence operative (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who works in the office of the U.S. Ambassador in Paris who takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent (John Travolta) who's been sent to France to stop a terrorist attack. It is literally just that - no deeper plot elements or side stories - just Travolta coming to Paris and sorting out a few bad guys in some violent and gruesome gun battles to stop the attack, it's nowhere near as serious or as multi-layered as Pierre Morel's previous movie, Taken [Blu-ray] [2008] (and doesn't intend to be, I don't think) it is however much more fun.

At times it's hard to determine whether Travolta is a good guy or not, but his character is still brilliantly over the top, reminding me of some of his better "bad-guy" roles in films such as Face/Off [Blu-ray] [1997], Broken Arrow [Blu-ray] [1996] and Swordfish [Blu-ray] [2001]. The film's climax has a good twist and an even better double-twist that I didn't see coming, so hat's off to the writers for that. I probably wouldn't buy this on DVD but would definitely watch it again if it was on TV.

Best not to talk about it
So is John Travolta batting for the wrong team? It seems he has been co-stared with someone that has a past of playing with the idea. Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Velvet Goldmine. Read more
