3.0 out of 5 stars I heart Paree 31 Jan 2011
By Inspector Gadget VINE™ VOICE
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
While there is no shortage of people jockeying for position in line to condemn Luc Besson, there's no denying the entertainment of his action movies. Over the past ten years the man has given us Kiss of the Dragon, the Transporter franchise, and Taken. These movies will never be up for any major awards but they are still worth the money and time for action fans.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers plays James Reese, the personal assistant to the American Ambassador in France who does odd, low-level covert jobs on the side. He longs for the big leagues, and gets his wish (to the extreme) when he's suddenly partnered with the flamboyant Charlie Wax (an OTT John Travolta, who really seems to be enjoying himself). Wax has a mission in Paris, but he's keeping the full details from Reese, gradually letting him further into the tangle of twists as the elaborate story unfolds. Racking up a body count of more than one an hour in the process.

The Travolta/Meyers double-act mostly pays off, but, like Reese, the audience is left out in the cold for the duration. Meyers doesn't do much but stand aside while Travolta rampages through posses of bad guys. I know he's the 'everyman' we can identify with, thus giving us a smoother insight into the world of espionage, but if he was just given a tiny bit more to do than stand around wide-eyed and frightened the film would have gotten a higher rating from me.

As 90-minute fluff we're talking serious entertainment here. If you're wanting more profound film-making look elsewhere (not that Besson is incapable of this either). From Paris With Love doesn't rewrite the rules of the action or spy genre, but it does play every expected note loudly and maniacally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great popcorn fodder 26 Dec 2011
By BPR
Format:DVD
French director Pierre Morel first came to my attention with the fantastic Banlieue 13, an action packed stylish melee from France that was a lot of fun. His second film, Taken, starring Liam Neeson was also a film I enjoyed a hell of a lot. From Paris with Love, is his third film, and like his others, I enjoyed it thoroughly for what it was, action action action. Based on a story by Luc Besson, From Paris with Love may not put that much thought into character development, but I came for the action, which was non-stop from beginning to end. Explosions, gunfights and great car chase sequences all built around a solid if formulaic plot and it was good to see John Travolta in the role of a CIA agent who shoots first, asks questions later. This is above average, action-thriller popcorn fodder. I look forward to Morel's next, which will hopefully be yet another collaboration with Luc Besson. 3.5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Entertainment 21 Dec 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is first class escapisim, how anybody could dodge so many bullets is beyond believe, there is not too much blood and guts anyway, and we are not expected to take it too seriously. The BlU RAY quality is top, and with a good multi channel sound track it is good entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brill Film 14 Sep 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This film is excellent, a great addition to my collection. John Travolta is one of my favourite actors, the shaved head is kind of wierd but it suited his roll. Highly recommend anyone to watch his film.

5.0 out of 5 stars "..AWESOME ACTION.." 28 April 2012
Format:Blu-ray
This is one super charged super cool film with loads of over the top action and violence!! The story is great fun with some interesting twists and turns throughout! The cast is great especially John Travolta who gives his most knockout performance since pulp fiction!! This movie is solid fun all the way! A must see gem of a film.

2.0 out of 5 stars A somewhat weak formula spy / action thriller. 28 May 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The film started promisingly enough with Rhys Meyer's character seemingly leading a double life; by day a mild mannered embassy aide, by night a wannabe spy. Unfortunately, John Travolta turned up and any hint of subtlety and intrigue vanished in half an hour of gratuitous violence reminiscent of later Steven Segal (yes, it really was that bad!). It was, however, worth sitting through the confusingly & pointless shoot-outs as it settled down into quite an acceptable little film. It's not a Bourne or even a Salt and summing it up as `well, that was better than we thought it was going to be' is not really glowing praise; not brilliant but not truly terrible either.
