Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young… Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Product Description

CD Description

This set has now been repackaged in a DVD sized Ecolbook which is the width of a normal CD making the set more compact & easier to store - Unlike its predecessor The Complete 50's Masters, the '60s box set From Nashville to Memphis does not include all of Elvis Presley's recordings from a single decade. To whittle the set down to a manageable five discs, RCA reissued Presley's movie soundtracks and gospel recordings separately, focusing this set instead on Elvis' secular single and album releases. The set starts promisingly with Presley's brilliant first post-Army recordings, originally released on the album Elvis is Back! and the set wraps up with the King's triumphant American Studio recordings, which include the hits "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds". Even Presley's lean years yielded their share of great recordings, making From Nashville to Memphis an essential addition to any serious music fan's collection.

After "The King of Rock'n'Roll" box, compiling the 60s box must have been a headache for RCA. They've left off the film soundtracks, gospel and live recordings to present Elvis' studio tracks in crystal clear sound and chronological order, complete with out-takes. Lacking the "must-have" appeal of the preceding and following boxes, this remains a superb and intelligent compilation.

I was surprised when this became another box set that vanished, especially as I had not bought, only borrowed it. Thank goodness that somebody at Sony has wised up to what is sitting on their shelves in the vaults.

If you need evidence that Elvis didn't 'die' when he went in the army, as John Lennon once famously said, this set is it. The studio sides spanning five discs from 1960-69 are of the highest order and show that Elvis was a creative force throughout the decade.

as good as it gets
As this is a re-issue of the 1993 LP-sized boxset at a fraction of the original cost, one can hardly complain about the lay-out of the box itself ! Read more

Silly packaging....that's being polite.
Who was the genius who decided the discs should be clipped together by bits of rough metal in this ridiculous manner - was it a failed GCSE project? Read more
