FROM OUT OF THE BLUE by Nadia Nichols

January 21, 2007

Amazon rating 4/5

FROM OUT OF THE BLUE by Nadia Nichols was one of those rare superromances that had me reaching for the tissues. Why the tears? Nadia Nichols covers a subject that will get anyone going - a single mother finds out she has a rare form of cancer and may not live to see her child's next birthday.

Lieutenant K.C. Jones (for Katherine Carolyn) has had a successful career. In a field dominated by men, K.C. (Katie) made it to Top Gun and was one of the best. She never let a man stand in her way, always ready to move up to the next rung of the military ladder. Then one night she made a big mistake - she had a one-night stand with a very good-looking military officer, Major Mitchell McCray, and the result was her five-year old son Hayden. She dealt with the pregnancy as best she could, opting to keeping the baby despite how it would impact her military career.

Now, she's dealing with another problem - she has been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. She has finally realized that her son may be left an orphan, and that the only thing Katie could do is to contact the father. She regrets tossing aside a letter that Mitchell had sent her shortly after their affair, but what's done is done. He has no idea he has a son, and it's her duty to let him know, in case something happens to her.

Katie, Hayden, and the nanny Rosa travel to Alaska, and their lives change forever. Katie meets up with Mitchell, and they are both still attracted to each other. But it takes a while for Katie to tell Mitchell the real reason why she has sought him out. Her goal is to have Mitchell and Hayden meet, see if Mitchell is father material, and then move to Montana with Hayden where her parents are, per their request. Katie is dying, and it is time for her to come home.

Nadia Nichols as always paints a beautiful portrait of the backdrop of Alaska, and writes a poignant story about a woman who knows her time is running out as she tries to bring her son and his father together. This book had me in tears, as Katie reflects on various things: her future (or lack of), on a fellow patient who spent her last days in the hospital, and on her son and his need for a father that doesn't know he exists. Hayden, fortunately, wins over Mitchell's heart, but it's apparent that Mitchell may not be ready for fatherhood just yet. Nichols keeps the reader in suspense until the epilogue, not letting on whether Katie will survive her cancer or not. FROM OUT OF THE BLUE is a story that packs a punch, and is well worth reading.
