In Brazil, Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) is considered an art form in its own right, both an academic subject to be taught and studied, and a uniting voice (alongside football) of an otherwise divided people. Outside Brazil, unfortunately, Brazilian pop music just means "The girl from Ipanema" and lambada.
This 3 CD collection, produced for a US audience, aims to put that right. It showcases Tom Jobim - a giant of MPB and a co-writer of "Girl from Ipanema". The CDs are stylishly presented in a 60-page ringbound card booklet containing a handful of photos, interviews and the odd translated lyric. (In fact, given the available space here, it's disappointing that so few lyrics are presented.) It may seem an eccentric choice to opt for your covershot a photo of the star in nappies at the age of six months, but it's in keeping with a packaging that claims to be definitive - Jobim from start to finish.
Well, it's eclectic rather than comprehensive, but there's enough well-chosen gold here to make this an always enjoyable and occasionally astonishing anthology. CD one is a compilation of classic Jobim tracks. In a marketplace in which a few such compilations are knocking about, this one hits most of the expected high spots and would be something of a class leader in its own right. CD two is the b-side of the bunch, a collection of instrumentals rehashed from three LPs - the seminal "Tide" and "Wave" and the oddly brash early work "The composer of Desafinado plays".
But with CD three the collection somes closest to fulfilling the promise of its packaging. Just five songs are represented on its 17 tracks - in English, Portuguese, bilingual and instrumental versions.
