Book Description

Notting Hill, Baker Street, King's Cross, Westminster ... the Circle Line transports us to and from many of London's most famous places, as well as some of its obscure corners (Temple, Euston Road, Aldgate). The 31 chapters of this book, each by a different writer, explore the territory around the Circle Line's stations and the network that connects them. Through fiction, poetry, memoir and reportage, they bring to life the extraordinary spirit of this complex, demanding, inspiring city.

There are 31 original stories about London, with contributions from Simon Armitage (Selected Poems, The White Stuff), Martin Gorst (Measuring Eternity), Ian Marchant (Parallel Lines, In Southern Waters) and John Simmons (My Sister's A Barista, Dark Angels).

From Here to Here is a vibrant exploration of a place rich in stories and history, and teeming with plots and characters. It's the prefect companion for any journey, but especially one underground.

From the Publisher

Written before the tragic bombings of 7 July,
this remarkable collection marks the return
of the eclectic and inspired literary anthology. Launching as part of the London Design Festival, From Here to Here is a unique collaboration which brings together Cyan Books, Platform for Art, London Underground staff, design students from the London College of Communication (part of University of the Arts, London), and members of the writers group ‘26’. The project is dedicated to London and the victims of the 7/7 attacks.

From the Author

This book was written before the tragic events of 7 July 2005 when London was attacked by terrorists. From Here to Here was written as a celebration of a diverse, cosmopolitan city, a city of all races, languages and faiths. We are proud of London and saddened by the indiscriminate actions of terrorists. If parts of this book seem at all insensitive in the light of those events, we apologise.

We dedicate this book to London and the victims of the 7 July attacks.

From the Inside Flap

"Sulphur-crested cockatoos rock and screech on the flimsy tips of silver birches, playing with gravity. In the shade below, I am sharpening pencils for Miss Dorothy. The task is taking a long time. The longer I take, the longer I can avoid playing the piano. Miss Dorothy's pencils are getting shorter and shorter. I am turning them into demi-semi-quavers."
From Spirituous by Elise Valmorbida (Moorgate)

"Virtually every item of furniture and square inch of carpet was draped in the sorry remnants of some manner of depravity. No matter how often Algy did the maths (though admittedly this wasn't his strong suit), he still couldn't arrive at the infinite number of sexual permutations on display."
From Hair of the Dog by Jim Davies (Euston Square)

From Here to Here brings together 31 new stories about London with contributions from Simon Armitage (Selected Poems, White Stuff), Martin Gorst (Measuring Eternity), Ian Marchant (Parallel Lines, In Southern Waters) and John Simmons (My Sister's A Barista, Dark Angels).
