Book Description

Welcome to a London on the cusp of the twenty-first century. And meet Anthony, Alison and Lucy. Anthony is the disillusioned junior partner of a City insolvency firm; Alison is his PR director wife; Lucy is the girl he has secretly been in love with for the past 17 years. This is the story of how Anthony and Lucy are brought together again, and the emotional consequences for the people involved. Set against the backdrop of a financial landscape where business is changing, dotcoms are booming and new technology is beginning to make its presence felt, D.J. Taylor’s novella is a dazzling exploration of the trouble we store up for ourselves when the choices we make come directly from the heart.

D.J. Taylor is the author of 11 novels, including Derby Day (2011), long-listed for the Man Booker Prize, and The Windsor Faction (2013). His non-fiction includes Orwell: The Life, which won the 2003 Whitbread Biography Prize, and Bright Young People: The Rise and Fall of a Generation 1918-1940 (2007).

This is book primarily about Anthony, a junior partner in an insolvency firm, and his interactions and feelings for two women. The first of these is his wife Alison, senior in PR, and Lucy, whom Anthony has loved/obsessed over since college days, but not seen or met again, until now...
This is quite long for a Kindle Single, which is good, as there is time for the characters to develop. The book is written in short segments from each of the main three points of view, and works well. It didn't feel like a short story at all, nor did it feel long. The whole thing is pitched very nicely, with just enough of everything to work very well indeed.
The author manages to induce a caring for all the characters, which means it's difficult to work out what, as a reader, you want to happen. The ending, when it came, was not quite what I'd expected, but it ended what was a nice entertaining read, and one I'd certainly recommend.

I found this book rather rambling. I enjoyed the actual prose but I finished the book feeling somewhat disappointed and up in the air.

This book was much too disjointed for me. But I enjoyed the thoughts and deliberations about the heart , medical aspects and emotional aspects.
