Product Description

WINNER!! - BEST USE OF FOOTAGE IN A HOME ENTERTAINMENT RELEASE - FOCAL INTERNATIONAL AWARDS 2013 - Regional and National news magazine programmes are familiar to us in the 21st century but back in 1964 the concept was still a new one. At 6.15pm on 5th October that year, ATV Midlands launched ATV Today, a regional news and current affairs programme that broadcast to the region each weekday, and viewers were introduced to a fresh new style that balanced the serious events of the day with light-hearted reports and special features. ATV Today was for the viewer and about the viewer and everyday life was celebrated, especially many of the wonderful characters of the region. ATV Reporters frequently asked the public for their opinion (vox-pops) on far ranging issues from politics and race relations to football and fashion. The Reporters became household names through the 1960s, 1970s and beyond: Reg Harcourt, who took an ATV camera team to film Enoch Powell s Rivers of Blood Speech - the only crew to film that day; Wolverhampton locals John Swallow and Sue Jay who reported with warmth and humour on the people and places of the communities they were passionate about; Anne Diamond and Nick Owen, who became household names as Anne and Nick on morning television through the 80s and 90s; Derek Hobson, who went on to be the host of New Faces; Chris Tarrant, who started his highly successful TV career on ATV Today; Gary Newbon, who has interviewed a whole host of sporting legends; Terry Thomas, who coined the phrase, TIGHT-LINES which we have honoured in the DVD title; and Bob Warman, who is still the face of the Midlands on ITV today. This two disc DVD in four parts chronicles the story of ATV Today from its beginning in 1964 to the last programme on 31st December 1981, and looks back at some of the big news stories in the region that made the headlines through the 60s and 70s through new exclusive interviews and a wealth of archive films, many of which haven t been seen since broadcast. With contributions from former ATV reporters Bob Hall, Reg Harcourt, Sue Jay, Wendy Nelson, Gary Newbon, Nick Owen, Chris Tarrant and Bob Warman and a peek behind the scenes with memories from ATV Cameraman Gary Hughes and Production Assistant, Barbara Bradbury, the DVD is packed with both poignant and humourous memories of a regional programme that often peaked to over 3 million viewers. Among many events remembered here are John Swallow interviewing Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise in 1966, Gary Newbon recalling his first meetings with a young Nigel Mansell, Chris Tarrant nervously climbing to the top of Peterchurch Steeple to kiss the golden cockerel while the film crew went off for lunch, and Nick Owen s 1979 report on Trevor Francis, the first million pound footballer, who signed to Nottingham Forest. Part 1: The 1960 s. Part 2: The Early 1970 s . Part 3: The Golden Era . Part 4: The Final Chapter - Format: 2 Discs presented in a digipak with protective cover and shrink wrapped. DVD PAL - Running Time: 371 mins - Ratio: 16:9 (Archive 4:3) - Colour/Black and White - Optional Subtitles for the Hard of Hearing.

Another excellent set of dvds from ATVLand to follow on from their history of the old Broad Street studios. Comprising a series of interviews with the remaining ex ATV Today presenters and reporters together with archive footage taken from the filmed stories from ATV Today, the package is engaging and professionally presented. The real gems are the archive elements of course and most will probably buy the dvds just for these glimpses of the Midlands forty years ago or more, but the specially filmed anecdotes and recollections of the likes of Bob Warman, Chris Tarrant, Sue Jay and others help bring to life some of the background of what was one of the best and most successful ITV regional companies and highlights just how inferior the current ITV regional "news" is by comparison.
Recommended for anyone who likes TV nostalgia or anyone who comes from the Midlands!

For anyone who watched the ATV Today programmes from the 1960's to 1980's will really enjoy these 2 DVDs, which are in four parts. There are some very amusing stories from the reporters today; recalling events of the day back then, many such as Chris Tarrant, Reg Harcourt, Sue Jay, Nick Owen and of course Bob Warman, who is still the face of the Midlands on ITV today. Some of the great sporting Legends were interviewed by Gary Newbon, who recalls with humour his first encounter, as a young shy reporter, with Brian Clough!
There is also some very funny footage of Chris Tarrant and John Swallow on a Tandem bike - I will say no more.
I found it very nostalgic as I remembered so many of the original items!
In part 4: The final Chapter, I have been given the honour of appearing with the great sport Legends - as I was the lady who raced a Dragster! and was interviewed by Bob Warman. He recalls the events of that day and I was also asked to give my recollection of that day - 35 years later!
If you buy this set you will not be dissapointed.

A fantastic part of British TV History, Captured wonderfully for all time!
A very fitting tribute to the memories of times gone by, from a very rich heritage of TV you don't see much today!!
If you like those times like I do, then this is a must see!!!

From Headlines to "Tight-Lines", the story of ATV Today.

This two disc DVD set is 371 minutes (in 4 parts) of pure Midlands nostalgia, neatly linked together by those who originally presented the programme - Reg Harcourt, Bob Warman, Wendy Nelson, Sue Jay and others.

ATV Today ran between 1964 and 1981 and the content covers the whole range of material from the period from serious news items through to the lighter, quirky features that are now sadly out of fashion.

The archive material comes from the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) using the original 16mm film and is of great quality. Its a pity no videotaped studio sequences survive apart from a few poor quality off-air recordings.

The set is nicely put together by the same team that produced "From ATVLand in Colour" and for the running time is very good value.
