Formed in 1984, the Fields of the Nephilim take their name from the Biblical legends of Nephilim, who were fallen angels expelled from Heaven for divulging hidden knowledge to humans. Their debut occurred in 1985 with their Burning the Fields EP, of which 500 copies were originally released on their own Tower label. The EP, even though being rather limited, caught the attention of Beggar's ... Read more in Amazon's Fields Of The Nephilim Store

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!! 27 May 2002
By Richard Kelly TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This CD is for those of you who enjoy early raw 80s goth. This is the Nephilim before they discovered keyboards and fancy sound making devices. Driving guitar riffs, sax (yes they did have a sax player originally) banging drums, deep growly vocals - everything you expect from Goth Rock really.
I've had all the tracks on record for years and getting this on CD was fantastic, although I must admit that I have Buring the Fields on CD and the other tracks are on Dawnrazer now - but you get the complete version of Laura II here and the version of Power here is the second attempt at the song.
All in all - FANTASTIC!!!!
Can't wait for the new LP - if it ever comes out!

4.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC UK GOTH 12 Oct 2001
Format:Audio CD
this cd compiles the "nephs" first 2 twelve inch singles with the additional track "return" which had previously only been available on the continent...
this serves as a history lesson to all those interested in the UK goth scene & its nice to be able to to put away those 12" singles into storage
classsic uk goth - it still sounds as good today

3.0 out of 5 stars Could do better..... 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
All you die-hard Psychonauts (nephilim fans to the uninitated) will have drooled all over your keyboard at this, their first release in 10 years. your saliva for the (supposed) new studio album thats already 2 years late. This is 2 EP's (Burning In The Fields from '85, and Returning To Gehenna-an Italian only release-from '86) cobbled together and stuck on a CD. Having listened to it umpteen times, I'm more than dissapointed. Nowhere near as good as 'Elizium' and barely worth the cash. Come on chaps....dont keep us waiting for new material.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, but not bad 5 July 2002
By "swordofset" - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is the Laura album with the songs all rearranged. I suspect this was done due to the fact that "Trees Come Down" really turned out being one of the fan faves back in the day and maybe somebody decided to open this up with the strongest track. This is Fields' weakest release probably because you can tell that these are the songs of a band still finding itself. the songs are somewhat derivative at some points (I hear the Cure, Sisters and even early Cult at times) all filtered through their style of songwriting. But that's not such a bad thing. Later Fields really comes into their own with a sound that becomes wholly their own. But this CD is worth it if you are into Fields, it's really quite good for what it is and it has the very excellent original version of "Trees Come Down" which I beleive is not available on other Fields' releases (not 100% sure about that now, but it used to only be on the Laura cd back in the day) and it's a track worth getting even if the rest is not as good. I would recommend this CD in order to make one's collection really complete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw Formative Period for Nephilim 10 July 2004
By SandmanVI - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Certainly the least accomplished of their albums, but very worth owning for fans. It is fun to here the raw as well as the more subtle hints at the majesty that would come. Songs like "Laura", "Laura II" and "Power" are balls to the wall power Goth. Early fan favorite "Trees Come Down" is a slow-building, paganistic brew that grows into a stomp. The minimal, delicate "Darkcell" is dark and haunted and has always been a favorite. "secrets" displays some of the gentle, elegant style that they would develop further later. All in all, it may be Nephilim's worst (excluding the post-breakup 'Zoon' and the pre-reformation, unendorsed 'Fallen') but it's still very good and any fan should want to know what started it all. Oh, and I certainly have listened to and enjoyed it more than 3 times.

2.0 out of 5 stars From Gehenna to Here 22 Jan 2002

Don't really understand the point of this. It's just the Laura Ablum (FOTN worst by a long shot) with the songs re-arranged.
I won't get it...I have owned Laura for years and listened to it maybe 3 times. Do yourself a favour and by revelations or Elizium or Earth Inferno(live) before this.
